Chapter 5

The grand ballroom was a masterpiece of opulent excess. The bright, natural cinematic lighting from the massive chandeliers illuminated hundreds of America's wealthiest elites. The air buzzed with the sound of a live string quartet, the clinking of crystal champagne flutes, and the low, arrogant hum of old money networking. Men in tailored tuxedos and women in lavish couture gowns moved across the polished parquet floor like peacocks displaying their feathers.

Near the center of the room, standing by a towering ice sculpture, were Brandon and Scarlett. They were holding court among a group of wealthy investors, looking incredibly confident and proud. Brandon held a glass of scotch, his fair, rosy skin practically glowing as he laughed at a joke one of the older men had just told. Scarlett stood beside him, holding a martini, playing the victim as she discreetly pointed out the microscopic stain on her green dress to a sympathetic socialite.

The heavy doors clicked shut behind Vanessa. She entered the ballroom with Zoe, holding the little girl’s hand firmly. Vanessa did not shrink away. She did not seek the shadows. She walked directly into the brightest part of the room, her charcoal pantsuit cutting a sharp, modern contrast against the sea of traditional gowns. Her exceptionally beautiful face was set in a mask of pure, untouchable stone.

It didn't take long for Brandon to spot her. His smile faltered instantly. He excused himself from the group of investors, his face hardening with anger as he marched directly toward his wife, stepping directly into her path to intercept her before she could mingle.

"What are you doing in here?" Brandon hissed, keeping his voice low so the surrounding guests wouldn't hear, though his American accent was thick with venom. "I told you to take her upstairs. Everyone is looking at you."

"Let them look," Vanessa replied smoothly, her voice a perfectly modulated hum of indifference. She did not stop walking, forcing Brandon to step backward or be run over.

"Stop walking, Vanessa," Brandon demanded, grabbing her elbow tightly.

Vanessa stopped. She looked down at his hand gripping her tailored sleeve, and then slowly raised her almond-shaped eyes to meet his. The look she gave him was so incredibly cold, so entirely devoid of the love she had faked for six years, that Brandon instinctively let go of her arm.

"Do not touch me, Brandon," Vanessa warned softly, the threat hovering in the air between them like a drawn blade.

"You are making a massive mistake," Brandon sneered, attempting to regain his dominant posture. He leaned in close, his breath smelling of expensive scotch and cheap arrogance. "You think because you look good in a suit that you belong here? You don't. You only have access to this room, to these people, to this entire life, because I put my ring on your finger."

Vanessa remained perfectly still, her elegant face betraying no emotion whatsoever. "Is that what you believe?"

"It's a fact," Brandon said, his smug, dismissive smile returning. He gestured vaguely to the room full of billionaires and politicians. "Look around you, Vanessa. These are the masters of the universe. And you? Without me, without this family and my name to shield you... you're nothing but street trash. You're a nobody from nowhere."

Vanessa let out a soft, beautiful, and utterly chilling laugh. It was a sound of genuine amusement that completely unnerved her husband.

"You have absolutely no idea what universe you are standing in, Brandon," Vanessa whispered, her captivating dark brown eyes locking onto his. "And you are about to find out exactly what 'nobody' really means."

Before Brandon could formulate a response to her cryptic warning, a massive ripple of silence began to spread through the far side of the ballroom, pulling his attention away.
