Chapter 6

The atmosphere in the grand ballroom shifted palpably, like the sudden drop in barometric pressure before a massive hurricane. The low hum of networking and arrogant laughter began to die out in waves, starting from the grand entrance at the far end of the hall and rolling across the room. The bright, cinematic lighting seemed to catch the dust motes hanging in the air as guests physically stepped back, parting like the Red Sea to create a wide, clear path.

Brandon frowned, turning his back on Vanessa to see what was causing the disruption. Even Scarlett, standing a few feet away, lowered her martini glass, her fair skin paling slightly as she stretched her neck to see through the crowd.

Walking down the newly formed aisle was Mr. Sterling.

At sixty-eight years old, Mr. Sterling was a terrifying force of nature wrapped in bespoke Italian wool. He was a White American man with fair, rosy skin and a shock of thick, perfectly styled silver hair. He wore a classic, immaculate black tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders flawlessly. There were no flashy diamonds, no gaudy displays of wealth on his person—he didn't need them. The power rolled off him in suffocating waves. He was the invisible hand that guided the city’s politics, its real estate, and its darkest, most lethal underground operations. He was a myth to most, a nightmare to those who knew him, and the undisputed king of the American elite.

He moved with a slow, predatory grace, his sharp blue eyes scanning the room. Behind him walked four massive men in dark suits—his personal security detail, moving in perfect, lethal synchronization.

"Good god," Brandon whispered reverently, his smugness completely vanishing, replaced by the desperate, fawning ambition of a social climber. "That's Marcus Sterling. He never attends these events. What is he doing here?"

Brandon immediately began to straighten his tie and smooth his suit jacket, frantically looking for a way to insert himself into Mr. Sterling’s path to introduce himself. "Vanessa, stay out of the way. If I can get two minutes with him, our firm's future is set for the next century."

Vanessa didn't answer. She stood perfectly still, her slender, graceful figure radiating absolute calm. She held Zoe’s hand, feeling the little girl vibrating with sudden excitement.

Mr. Sterling continued his slow march toward the center of the room. He didn't look at the billionaires bowing their heads in respect. He didn't acknowledge the politicians offering weak, terrified smiles. He was looking for something specific.

Zoe, peeking around Brandon's legs, suddenly spotted the silver-haired titan across the ballroom. The little girl’s eyes widened, completely ignoring the sea of terrifying strangers and the opulent intimidation of the room. She recognized the man who read her bedtime stories, the man who brought her illegal Swiss chocolates, the man who let her wear his million-dollar watch like a toy.

"Grandpa!" Zoe gasped, her high, sweet voice cutting through the thick tension of the room, though not quite loud enough for the entire hall to hear over the string quartet still desperately playing in the corner.

With a sudden, violent tug, Zoe pulled her small hand free from Vanessa’s gentle grip.

"Zoe, wait," Vanessa said softly, but she didn't reach out to grab the child back. She simply watched, a knowing, dangerous gleam settling in her almond eyes.

Brandon turned around, horrified, as he realized the five-year-old was no longer standing behind them. "What is she doing? Grab her! She’s going to ruin everything!" Brandon hissed frantically, lunging forward to catch the little girl in the pink tulle dress.

But Vanessa simply stepped sideways, her tailored shoulder checking Brandon just hard enough to throw him entirely off balance, allowing Zoe to slip past him and run directly into the open expanse of the ballroom floor.
