Chapter 2

The sheer audacity of Scarlett’s words hung in the air, toxic and heavy. On the cold marble floor, Vanessa pulled Zoe tighter into her arms, pressing the little girl’s face against the lapel of her tailored pantsuit. Zoe was sobbing hysterically against her shoulder, her small, tulle-covered body trembling with a mixture of profound shock and physical pain. Vanessa’s elegant fingers gently stroked Zoe’s soft, dark curls, her touch infinitely tender, but a terrifying, dormant storm was brewing behind her almond-shaped eyes.

"Shh, baby, I've got you. Mommy is right here. You are perfectly safe," Vanessa whispered into Zoe’s ear, her tone steady despite the inferno igniting in her chest.

"She hit me, Mommy! It hurts!" Zoe cried, her medium-brown skin slick with tears, the small tiara knocked askew on her head.

"I know, my sweet girl. I know it hurts. But I promise you, it will never happen again," Vanessa murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the child’s temple.

Vanessa rose slowly from the marble floor, her movements measured, graceful, and utterly lethal. She held Zoe securely on her hip, her slender frame easily supporting the child’s weight. She did not look at Scarlett. Instead, her dark, captivating eyes locked directly onto Brandon.

Brandon shifted his weight slightly, his fair, rosy skin reflecting the bright, pristine lighting of the foyer. He let out a long, dramatic sigh, as if he were the one being deeply inconvenienced by the situation.

"Honestly, Vanessa," Brandon said, his American accent laced with a patronizing drawl. "You need to teach the kid some manners. She was running around like a feral animal. Scarlett had every right to be upset about the couture. Do you know how hard it is to get that designer?"

Vanessa stared at the man she had lived with for six years. For six years, she had played the role of the quiet, grateful wife. She had endured the subtle racism of his social circle, the backhanded compliments, and his constant need to remind her that he had "saved" her from a life of obscurity. She had done it all to keep a promise she had made a long time ago. But looking at him now—looking at the man who would watch a grown woman strike his five-year-old daughter and defend the dress over the child—the illusion shattered completely.

"She is five years old, Brandon," Vanessa said, her voice dropping into a low, protective register that Brandon had never heard before. There was a new, icy calm to her tone that made the air around her feel instantly freezing. "And your friend just assaulted her."

"Oh, please, don't be so dramatic," Scarlett interjected, rolling her eyes and adjusting her emerald gown. "It was barely a tap. It will teach her to watch where she’s going in civilized company."

Vanessa slowly turned her head, her sculpted cheekbones tight as she fixed Scarlett with a look of absolute, unadulterated ruin.

"You do not speak," Vanessa commanded softly, but the sheer, heavy authority behind the three words made Scarlett’s jaw snap shut involuntarily.

Brandon stepped forward, his brow furrowing in irritation. "Excuse me? Who do you think you're talking to, Vanessa? Scarlett's family practically funded this entire gala. You will apologize to her immediately, and you will take Zoe upstairs so she stops making that god-awful noise."

"I am not apologizing to anyone," Vanessa replied, her gaze shifting back to Brandon. The beautiful, submissive wife was gone, replaced by a woman whose bloodline was built on power and consequence.

"You are my wife, and you will do exactly as I say," Brandon sneered, taking another step closer, attempting to use his physical presence to intimidate her. "You forget your place in this house."

Vanessa did not flinch. She did not step back. She simply adjusted her hold on her weeping daughter and looked Brandon dead in the eye, the cinematic light illuminating the terrifying conviction in her dark eyes.

"No," Vanessa whispered, her voice a chilling promise that vibrated in the silent foyer. "No one will ever lay a hand on you again, Zoe. And no one in this house will ever disrespect us again. Your reign is over, Brandon."
