Chapter 3

Brandon let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed hollowly off the marble walls. His fair, rosy skin flushed with arrogant amusement. He ran a hand through his perfectly styled hair, looking at Vanessa as if she had suddenly lost her mind.

"My reign is over?" Brandon repeated, shaking his head. "Are you listening to yourself, Vanessa? You are having a complete psychotic break. Go upstairs before you embarrass me in front of the board members."

"Come on, Brandon," Scarlett sighed impatiently, linking her arm through his. "Leave the help to deal with her brat. The music is starting, and I want a drink to calm my nerves after this ordeal."

"You're right, Scarlett. Let's go," Brandon agreed smoothly. He threw one last, dismissive look at his wife. "Clean her face, Vanessa. If you come into the ballroom, I expect you to smile."

Vanessa watched them turn their backs and walk toward the massive, gilded doors of the main ballroom. They moved with the confident, arrogant stride of people who believed they were utterly untouchable. They believed they owned the world because of their bank accounts and their societal standing. They were profoundly, fatally wrong.

Still holding Zoe close to her chest, Vanessa looked down at her own left wrist. Hidden beneath the impeccably tailored cuff of her charcoal pantsuit was a simple, faded red thread bracelet. It was worn, frayed at the edges, a stark contrast to the millions of dollars of diamonds floating around the estate. It was a promise. A binding contract she had made with her father to step away from his dark, violent empire and attempt to live a normal, peaceful life. She had sworn she would only break it if her life—or her child’s life—was in absolute peril.

The stinging red handprint currently blooming on Zoe’s medium-brown cheek was all the justification she needed.

Without a single moment of hesitation, Vanessa hooked her index finger under the faded red thread. With a sharp, definitive snap, she broke the bracelet. The thread fluttered to the pristine marble floor, completely forgotten.

With her free hand, Vanessa reached into the inner pocket of her tailored jacket and retrieved a heavy, encrypted black phone. It was a device Brandon did not know existed. She pressed a single button, bypassing all security protocols, and raised the phone to her ear. The line connected in less than a second.

"Status," a deep, heavily modulated American voice answered immediately on the other end.

"Code Red. The perimeter is breached. The ceasefire is officially terminated," Vanessa stated, her voice entirely devoid of warmth. Her face had changed entirely. The wounded, long-suffering wife had evaporated into the bright light, replaced by the powerful, ruthless heiress she was born to be.

"Understood, Miss Sterling," the voice replied, a hint of dangerous anticipation bleeding into the professionalism. "What are your orders?"

"Deploy the inner circle to all exits of the Hayes estate immediately. No one leaves the ballroom without my personal authorization," Vanessa commanded, her almond eyes narrowing as she watched the ballroom doors swing shut behind Brandon and Scarlett.

"Deployment in ninety seconds. Will you require an extraction team?" the voice asked.

"No," Vanessa replied coldly, gently rubbing Zoe’s back as the little girl’s sobs finally began to subside into quiet hiccups. "I do not need to be extracted. I need the stage set."

"And your father, Miss Sterling? Should I inform the Chairman?"

Vanessa’s lips curled into a terrifying, beautiful smile that did not reach her eyes. The cinematic lighting caught the sharp angles of her sculpted cheekbones, making her look like a goddess of vengeance.

"My father is already inside the ballroom," Vanessa said, her voice a cold, commanding hum of pure authority. "Tell my father I'm done hiding. Lift all restrictions. It's time to remind these people who actually owns this city."

"Consider it done, ma'am," the operative replied before the line clicked dead.

Vanessa lowered the phone and slipped it back into her jacket. She took a deep, centering breath, inhaling the scent of expensive lilies and impending ruin. The game of playing the submissive housewife was officially over.
