Chapter 6

The hours dragged by with agonizing slowness. Inside the master guest suite, Elise did her best to maintain a facade of calm for Noah’s sake. The toddler sat on the thick Persian rug, completely absorbed in crashing a red toy truck into a barricade of wooden blocks. He wore a cozy blue sweater, his rosy cheeks flushed with the warmth of the room, completely oblivious to the violence brewing outside the thick stone walls.

Elise kept the volume on her new hearing aid turned up slightly higher than usual, hyper-aware of every distant sound. The mansion was eerily quiet, the usual bustling of the staff replaced by the tense silence of armed guards waiting for a breach.

She walked to the reinforced window, looking out over the snow-covered grounds. The winter sky had darkened into a bruised, ominous gray. The snow began to fall heavier, obscuring the distant tree line and the wrought-iron perimeter gates.

"Mommy, look!" Noah called out, holding up a mangled block structure. "I broke it!"

Elise forced a warm smile, walking over to kneel beside him. "You certainly did, sweetie. It was a very big crash."

Noah giggled, wrapping his small arms around her neck. "I love you, Mommy."

The words struck Elise like a physical blow. The absolute purity of his affection was the catalyst that had torn the Ashford empire apart, but looking at his innocent face, she wouldn't change a single second of it. She hugged him tightly, breathing in the scent of his baby shampoo.

Suddenly, a sharp, piercing electronic whine blasted through the suite. Elise winced, grabbing her ear as the new hearing device amplified the estate's emergency lockdown siren. Red strobe lights began flashing in the corners of the ceiling.

The heavy oak door of the suite burst open. Marcus, Nolan’s towering, scarred lieutenant, stepped into the room. He held an assault rifle lowered at his side, his face smeared with sweat and urgency.

"Miss Hart, we have a problem," Marcus barked over the blaring siren. "The Voss family hit the southern gate with an explosive charge. They breached the perimeter."

Elise stood up, grabbing Noah and pulling him behind her legs. "Are they in the house?"

"Not yet, but they're pushing hard across the courtyard," Marcus insisted, stepping further into the room. "The boss gave strict orders. If the perimeter falls, I move you to the underground bunker. We don't have time to wait. Grab the boy."

Elise scooped Noah into her arms. The toddler began to cry, terrified by the flashing red lights and the deafening alarm.

"It's okay, Noah, we're just going to play a hiding game," Elise said loudly, trying to project calm despite her own racing heart.

She followed Marcus out into the grand hallway. The luxurious mansion was transforming into a chaotic war zone. Guards in dark tactical gear were sprinting past them, shouting orders and taking up defensive positions behind marble pillars. The acrid smell of smoke began to filter through the ventilation system.

"Keep your head down!" Marcus ordered, leading her toward the hidden servants' staircase that dropped directly into the lower levels of the estate.

As they reached the heavy wooden door of the stairwell, the floorboards beneath their feet vibrated violently. A muffled, thunderous boom echoed from the main foyer.

"They breached the front doors!" a guard yelled over a tactical radio on Marcus's vest.

Marcus cursed violently. "Move, Elise! Down the stairs, now!"

Elise plunged into the dark, narrow stairwell, holding Noah so tightly her arms ached, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The war had breached the walls, and the nightmare was just beginning.
