Chapter 5

The morning sun struggled to pierce the thick, grey winter clouds hanging heavily over the Ashford estate. Inside the mansion, the festive atmosphere had been completely stripped away, replaced by the grim, hyper-vigilant reality of a mafia stronghold bracing for a siege. Heavily armed guards in tactical gear patrolled the grand hallways, their boots vibrating against the marble floors—a sensation Elise could feel even without her hearing aid.

Elise was seated in a luxurious guest suite in the secure east wing. The fitted black maid dress had been discarded by Nolan’s strict orders. She now wore a soft, charcoal-grey cashmere sweater and tailored dark trousers. Her hair was neatly brushed, falling smoothly over her shoulders.

A silver-haired audiologist, escorted by two of Nolan’s imposing men, was carefully fitting a sleek, state-of-the-art hearing device over Elise's right ear.

"How is that, Miss Hart?" the doctor asked, adjusting a dial on his tablet.

Suddenly, the muffled, underwater world shattered. The crisp rustle of fabric, the humming of the central heating, and the deep, resonant breathing of the men in the room flooded into her ear. It was perfectly clear, sharper than her old device had ever been.

"I can hear you," Elise gasped, a profound wave of relief washing over her. "It's perfect. Thank you."

The heavy oak door opened, and Nolan walked in. He had traded his three-piece suit for a dark turtleneck and a shoulder holster, the lethal weapon resting snugly against his ribs. He looked exhausted, his swept-back hair slightly disheveled, but his dark eyes instantly softened when he saw the device resting discreetly behind her ear.

"Can you hear me?" Nolan asked, his deep, gravelly voice washing over her.

"Loud and clear," Elise smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that made Nolan’s breath catch slightly.

The audiologist quickly packed his equipment, sensing the dangerous shift in the room's energy, and allowed the guards to escort him out. Nolan crossed the suite and sat on the edge of the plush sofa beside her.

"How is Noah?" Elise asked, looking toward the adjoining bedroom door.

"He's playing with his toys. He slept fine," Nolan replied. He leaned forward, resting his tattooed hands on his knees. "I need to brief you on the situation outside these walls, Elise. Elias Voss didn't wait long. They firebombed two of our warehouses at the docks an hour ago."

Elise’s heart spiked with instant panic. "They're attacking the syndicate. Because of me."

"No," Nolan corrected firmly, reaching out to gently grasp her hand. "Because Elias Voss is a proud, violent man who needed an excuse to challenge my authority. The broken engagement was just the spark. This war was inevitable."

"What happens now?" she whispered, her clear eyes wide with fear.

"I have to leave the estate to secure our remaining supply lines and rally the captains," Nolan explained, his gaze intense and unwavering. "If I show weakness today, other families will join the Voss syndicate. I will leave my top lieutenant, Marcus, to guard this wing. You and Noah are not to leave this suite under any circumstances."

"Please be careful, Nolan," Elise said, her voice trembling slightly. It was the first time she had used his given name, and the intimacy of it hung heavily in the air.

Nolan squeezed her hand, a fierce, protective fire burning in his eyes. "I will come back to you. I swear it on my life."

He stood up, pressing a warm, lingering kiss to her forehead, before turning and striding out of the room. As the heavy door clicked shut, the reality of the mafia war pressed in on Elise. She was no longer watching from the sidelines; she was at the very center of the storm.
