Chapter 2

The tension near the evergreen garlands was thick enough to cut with a knife, but the wealthy guests deliberately averted their eyes, unwilling to intervene in the cruel whims of a mafia boss's fiancée. Elise lowered her outstretched hand, the crushing weight of her deafness making her feel incredibly small.
Suddenly, a tiny weight pressed against her leg. Elise looked down to see three-year-old Noah Ashford clinging to her rumpled white apron. The little boy had soft curls, round rosy cheeks, and little dimples that were currently hidden beneath a mask of fierce, innocent anger. He wore a cream knitted reindeer sweater, red corduroy overalls, and miniature brown boots. Clutched tightly under his left arm was a plush rabbit with a torn ear.
Noah pointed a small, accusatory finger directly at the velvet case in Daphne's hand, then looked up, his eyes catching sight of an imposing figure approaching from the shadow of the towering Christmas tree.
Nolan Ashford commanded the room without speaking a single word. At thirty-three, the mafia boss possessed broad shoulders, a sharp, angular jaw, and naturally swept-back hair. The extremely short stubble on his face gave him a rugged, dangerous edge. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit that accentuated his formidable physique. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand, complementing a luxury wristwatch. As he walked, the artistic tattoos decorating his hands and fingers with visible negative space caught the candlelight, and a small, intricate neck tattoo appeared just above his crisp white collar.
Noah looked up at his father with pure, innocent concern.
"Auntie broke Mommy's little ear!" Noah announced. His toddler voice, bright and uninhibited, sliced through the ambient chatter of the reception.
Every guest in the immediate vicinity fell dead silent. The sudden hush rippled outward like a shockwave, turning dozens of heads toward the scene.
Nolan stopped. His dark, calculating gaze took in the scene with terrifying speed: his son clinging to the trembling maid, Elise's disheveled hair and crooked headband, and his fiancée holding the small case.
Knowing Elise's condition perfectly well, Nolan deliberately stepped directly into Elise’s eyeline. He closed the distance, ensuring his face was clearly visible in the golden chandelier light, entirely ignoring Daphne.
"Elise," Nolan said, speaking slowly and quietly, forming the words with meticulous clarity so she could read his lips. "Your hearing aid?"
Elise watched Nolan’s mouth, the precise movement of his lips offering a lifeline in the silent room. She then met his dark, intense eyes. A profound, unspoken understanding passed between them. She steadied a trembling breath, refusing to shrink under the weight of the staring crowd.

"For letting Noah call me Mommy," Elise answered. Her voice was soft, yet it carried an undeniable, devastating truth that echoed in the absolute silence of the room.
Nolan did not blink. The muscles in his angular jaw feathered as he clenched his teeth. The air pressure in the room seemed to drop, a suffocating, lethal tension radiating from the mafia boss. He did not look away from Elise, but the silent promise of violence in his posture made the surrounding guests subconsciously take a step backward.
