Chapter 1

Tiered crystal chandeliers flooded the sprawling reception room with warm, golden light, casting an opulent glow over the elite members of the criminal underworld. Inside Nolan Ashford’s luxurious mansion, the holiday season was merely another backdrop for power displays and treacherous alliances. Tall ivory candles glowed steadily inside glass hurricane holders, arranged meticulously along polished walnut consoles. The amber illumination reflected endlessly across gilded mirrors, polished marble floors, carved mahogany furniture, and plush burgundy velvet sofas. At the far end of the grand hall, a towering Christmas tree sparkled with golden fairy lights, deep red ribbons, and delicate glass ornaments. Formally dressed guests, clad in tailored suits and dripping with diamonds, mingled beside evergreen garlands and beautifully wrapped presents.

For Elise Hart, the golden splendor of the room felt like a suffocating cage. She was a beautiful, gentle maid with a petite build, an oval face, and clear, expressive eyes that were currently wide with distress. She wore a fitted black maid dress, stark white collar and cuffs, and a white ruffled headband that sat slightly crooked atop her disheveled hair. Her white apron was rumpled from a physical struggle that the wealthy guests had conveniently ignored. Elise possessed significant hearing loss, a vulnerability she usually managed with grace. But tonight, she was plunged into a muffled, terrifying underwater world.

Standing before her was Daphne Voss, Nolan’s fiancée. Daphne was a vision of aristocratic cruelty, wearing a breathtaking emerald velvet gown and heavy diamond earrings that flashed with her every sharp movement. In her perfectly manicured hand, she held an open, velvet-lined case. Resting inside was the crushed, irreparably damaged plastic of Elise’s hearing aid.

Elise reached a trembling hand toward the case, her chest heaving with silent panic. She needed the device to navigate the dangerous currents of the Ashford household. Without it, the ambient noise of the crowded room was reduced to a low, confusing hum.

Daphne snatched the case back, holding it just beyond Elise’s reaching fingers. A vicious, mocking smile curled Daphne's red lips.

"Please, Miss Voss," Elise whispered, her voice wavering slightly as she struggled to gauge her own volume. "I need that to do my job. I cannot hear the guests."

"Answer me. Stop pretending," Daphne said, her enunciation deliberately exaggerated.

Elise watched Daphne’s face intently, her eyes darting between Daphne’s lips and her cold eyes, trying desperately to follow the words visually.

"I am not pretending," Elise pleaded, her hands dropping to her sides in defeat. "I didn't tell him to say it. He is only a child, Miss Voss. He doesn't understand the boundaries."

"He understands perfectly well," Daphne hissed, leaning in closer so Elise could not mistake the shape of her words. "You have been coddling the boy behind my back, filling his head with ridiculous notions. I am the future lady of this syndicate. I am the only mother he will ever know."

"He was crying," Elise explained, tears of frustration gathering in her expressive eyes. "I only held him until he fell asleep. Please, give it back."

"It's garbage now," Daphne replied, snapping the case shut with a sharp, muted click that Elise felt more than heard. "Just like your place in this house. You will pack your pathetic little bags tonight, or I will have my father's men throw you into the freezing snow."

Elise stepped back, her breath hitching. She was completely isolated in a room filled with two hundred people, trapped in a silent nightmare designed entirely by the woman who was about to inherit the Ashford empire.
