Chapter 3

The silence in the opulent ballroom stretched until it felt like a physical weight. Daphne’s carefully constructed public smile faded entirely, her fair skin paling under the sudden, suffocating scrutiny of the syndicate's elite. She briefly glanced toward the watching guests, reading the shock on the faces of rival bosses and politicians, before looking directly at Elise with a mask of controlled resentment.

"Now you can't hear it," Daphne sneered, unable to stop the venom from spilling from her lips, even under Nolan's shadow.

Nolan moved with the terrifying, fluid grace of a predator. He reached out and took the case from Daphne's hand, his tattooed fingers brushing against her emerald velvet gown with absolute disgust. He did not raise his voice, nor did he strike her, but the sheer force of his presence as he stepped squarely between Daphne and Elise was a definitive execution of their alliance.

Noah, sensing the shift in power, wrapped both of his small arms tightly around Elise’s waist. Elise looked down at the boy, her clear eyes softening, and gently returned the embrace, resting her hand protectively on his soft curls.

Nolan opened the case, holding the crushed, mangled plastic of the hearing aid in clear view for the entire room to see. He fixed Daphne with a cold, unwavering stare.

"You bring violence against a woman in my employ, and you terrorize my son," Nolan said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that carried effortlessly across the marble floors. "You have crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed, Daphne."

"Nolan, you cannot be serious," Daphne stammered, panic finally cracking her aristocratic facade. "She is a servant! She was trying to usurp my place! I was simply establishing boundaries in my future home."

"This is not your home," Nolan stated with glacial finality. "And you have no future here. The engagement is terminated."

A collective gasp swept through the crowd. Elias Voss, Daphne's father and a ruthless underboss who controlled the city's western ports, shoved his way to the front of the crowd. His face was purple with rage.

"What is the meaning of this disrespect, Nolan?" Elias roared, gesturing wildly at his daughter. "You are breaking a blood pact over a deaf maid? You insult my family in front of the entire Commission?"

"Your daughter insulted my blood when she made my son weep," Nolan replied, not breaking his stare with Daphne. "Take her and leave my property, Elias. Before I forget the history between our families."

"You are making a grave mistake," Elias warned, his hand drifting dangerously close to the concealed weapon beneath his suit jacket. "The Voss family does not accept this humiliation. We will block your shipments by morning."

"Try it," Nolan challenged softly, his broad shoulders squared. "I will burn your ports to the ground. Get out."

Daphne let out a humiliated sob, gathering the skirts of her emerald gown as she turned and fled toward the grand entrance. Her father glared at Nolan, a silent promise of war passing between the two men, before he turned and followed his daughter out into the freezing winter night.

Nolan turned his back on the stunned guests. He looked down at Elise, who was holding his son, completely cut off from the audio of the dramatic fallout. He gently touched her shoulder to gain her attention, his eyes softening instantly.

"Come with me," Nolan mouthed clearly. "Both of you."
