Chapter 9
Ryan broke completely that night.
Not because he found courage.
Because Caleb stopped protecting him.
James brought him to the Bennett estate and placed him in a room with Emily, Linda, and three bodyguards. No chains. No shouting. No theatrics.
Ryan looked smaller without the apartment around him.
Emily looked at him for a long time.
“When did you start working for Caleb?”
Ryan rubbed his swollen jaw.
“Before we married.”
The answer hurt more than she expected.
James saw it.
“So the marriage was planned?” Emily asked.
Ryan hesitated.
Linda answered for him.
“Caleb introduced you for a reason.”
Emily looked at her.
Linda folded her arms.
“You were James Bennett’s daughter. Don’t act shocked that people noticed.”
Ryan interrupted.
“It wasn’t all fake.”
Emily laughed once.
That sounded worse than if he had said nothing.
He moved closer.
“I loved you.”
“You locked me in a room.”
“You wouldn’t answer.”
Emily stared at him.
Ryan realized too late what he had done.
Again.
Same excuse.
Same blame.
“If you had just told us what your mother said, none of this would have happened.”
James started forward.
Emily raised one hand.
Her father stopped.
That mattered.
She looked at Ryan.
“You keep saying that because you need my resistance to be the crime.”
Ryan’s face hardened.
Linda scoffed.
“She always was dramatic.”
Emily turned.
Linda continued.
“Seven months pregnant and suddenly every bruise is a tragedy. Women used to survive harder things without calling Daddy.”
James’s jaw tightened.
Emily surprised him.
She smiled.
Not because it was funny.
Because she finally heard the cruelty without believing it.
“You starved your grandson too.”
Linda’s face changed.
Emily placed both hands around her stomach.
“When you took my food, you took his.”
Linda looked away.
Ryan did too.
Emily had spent six weeks being told she was weak.
Now she understood something they never had.
May you like
Surviving them had not made her weak.
Believing she deserved them had.
