Chapter 4

James called Caleb himself.

He did not mention the locked room.

He did not mention the recorder.

He only said Emily was ill and that Ryan had created a problem.

Caleb arrived twenty-three minutes later.

Too fast for a man who supposedly knew nothing.

He stepped into the apartment wearing a dark suit and the same silver veteran’s pin he had worn beside James for decades. His expression carried exactly the right amount of concern.

“Where’s Emily?”

James stood in the hallway.

“Safe.”

Caleb nodded.

“And the room?”

Nobody moved.

Caleb realized what he had said.

James watched thirty years of friendship collapse inside a single pause.

“What room?” he asked.

Caleb recovered quickly.

“I assumed you meant the nursery.”

“There is no nursery behind that door.”

Ryan looked away.

Linda closed her eyes.

Caleb saw both reactions and understood the lie had already failed.

James took one step closer.

“You told them not to damage my grandchild.”

Caleb’s face changed.

Not much.

Enough.

“James—”

“You told them I would bend faster if Emily and the baby were still useful.”

Caleb looked toward Ryan.

That small movement was the worst possible thing he could have done.

Ryan exploded.

“You said he’d never hear that recording.”

Linda turned on her son.

“Shut up.”

But it was over.

Caleb’s carefully controlled expression finally cracked.

James looked at the man who had stood beside him through war, funerals, blood feuds, births, and leadership changes.

“You put my daughter in that room.”

Caleb’s jaw tightened.

“I told them to ask questions.”

“She’s seven months pregnant.”

“I told them not to hurt her.”

Emily gave a broken laugh from the bedroom.

Caleb heard it.

James did too.

Then Emily spoke.

“He said hunger isn’t hurting.”

Caleb looked toward the doorway.

Emily was standing there with one hand against the frame.

“You said fear makes people honest.”

Caleb’s face hardened.

James understood then.

May you like

This was not a misunderstanding.

Caleb believed he had been right.
