Chapter 8

Caleb did not apologize.

That told James more about him than the confession itself.

“The convoy had become compromised,” Caleb said. “I made a decision.”

“You sent our own men into an ambush.”

“I redirected risk.”

Emily stared at him.

“People died.”

Caleb looked at her with the same cold patience he had used on the recorder.

“That happens.”

James’s expression emptied.

Caleb continued.

“Your father built the Bennetts because he understood sacrifice. Then Sarah taught you to count every loss like a personal tragedy.”

James took one step closer.

“They were personal.”

“That is why you changed.”

Caleb actually sounded disappointed.

“Army colonel. Mafia boss. And then a husband. A father. Suddenly every hard decision needed permission from your conscience.”

Emily looked at her father.

She saw it then.

Caleb did not merely hate Sarah for discovering the truth.

He hated what she represented.

The part of James he could no longer control through old ideas of duty.

“What happened to Mom?” Emily asked.

Caleb looked at her.

James turned too.

Emily’s voice shook.

“You knew she was afraid to use her car.”

Caleb said nothing.

“Did you do something to it?”

James felt the room change.

That question had been waiting eight years.

Caleb’s silence lasted too long.

Then he said, “Sarah should have left the family alone.”

Emily’s face collapsed.

James grabbed Caleb by the front of his suit and drove him back against the red wall.

Bodyguards moved, then stopped.

Not because they feared James.

Because they knew better than to interrupt.

“Did you touch her car?”

Caleb looked him in the eye.

“No.”

James held him there.

Then Caleb added:

“I told someone else where she would be.”

James’s grip tightened.

“Who?”

Caleb smiled faintly.

“You still think I was the only man who believed you were becoming weak?”

There it was.

Another layer.

Not a new mastermind.

A faction.

An old one.

May you like

Men who had spent years waiting for James to become the kind of leader they remembered.

And Caleb had used Emily’s marriage to find out how much of Sarah’s evidence survived before those men moved again.
