Chapter 15

The Bennett organization did not collapse.

That disappointed Caleb more than anything.

Men adjusted.

Old captains who had listened to him admitted it. Younger men who had never trusted him stopped pretending respect was obligation. Crews returned to normal. The feared civil fracture never arrived because James refused to perform one for Caleb.

Ryan and Linda disappeared from Bennett family life.

No speeches.

No farewell dinner.

No dramatic final audience.

They simply stopped belonging in rooms where Emily and her child were discussed.

Caleb lost every command route he once controlled.

James did not erase his name.

He let people remember it accurately.

That was worse.

One evening, Emily found her father standing alone in Sarah’s old sitting room with the pink teddy bear in his hands.

He had cleaned it.

The ribbon was still crooked from where Linda threw it into his chest.

“You kept it,” Emily said.

James looked down.

“I brought it for the baby.”

Emily sat carefully on the sofa.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then James said the thing he had been avoiding.

“I should have seen it.”

Emily looked at him.

“Ryan.”

Her father nodded.

“The way you stopped visiting. The excuses. You wearing long sleeves in summer.”

His voice roughened.

“I should have known.”

Emily leaned back.

“You asked me twice if I was okay.”

“I believed you when you said yes.”

“I wanted you to.”

James looked at her.

She continued.

“Because admitting it made me feel stupid.”

“You weren’t.”

“I know that now.”

He sat beside her.

James Bennett had spent most of his life believing protection meant reaching danger before it reached his family.

Emily had taught him something harder.

Sometimes the person you love has to be allowed enough safety to tell you danger is already there.

He held out the teddy bear.

Emily smiled faintly.

“Keep it until he’s born.”

James looked surprised.

“He?”

Emily nodded.

James’s face changed completely.

For the first time since the apartment, something other than rage reached his eyes.

May you like

A grandson.

Still safe.
