Chapter 11

The senior captains gathered in the Bennett dining hall that night.

James did not sit at the head of the table.

He stood beside the tape recorder.

Caleb was brought in last.

Several men looked away from him.

Others looked relieved to see him.

That was honest.

Caleb had been their friend too.

James played Sarah’s first tape without introduction.

Nobody spoke while her voice filled the room.

The convoy.

The false route.

The confrontation.

Caleb’s confession.

When it ended, an old captain named Morris leaned back in his chair.

“You told us Sarah had recordings on all of us.”

Caleb shrugged.

“She might have.”

James opened the Red Room box.

Three tapes.

He placed them on the table.

“All Caleb.”

Silence.

Morris looked at Caleb.

“You made us afraid James had been collecting leverage.”

Caleb’s expression hardened.

“I made you careful.”

Another captain spoke.

“You made us loyal to you.”

Caleb looked at him.

“If James had remained the man we followed twenty years ago, none of this would have been necessary.”

James almost smiled.

There it was again.

The same grievance.

He had changed.

Caleb had not.

James looked around the room.

“He’s right.”

Several men stared at him.

Caleb did too.

James continued.

“I changed.”

No apology.

“I became a husband. A father. Now I’m about to become a grandfather.”

He looked toward Emily standing near the doorway.

“If that disqualifies me in anyone’s eyes, walk out.”

Nobody moved.

Caleb scoffed.

“They’re afraid.”

James stepped away from the table.

“Then stand with him.”

No guards moved.

No doors locked.

No threats.

Caleb looked around.

One man lowered his eyes.

Another leaned back.

Morris removed the old pin Caleb had given him years earlier and placed it on the table.

Then another man did the same.

Caleb watched thirty years of influence become small pieces of metal in front of him.

May you like

Not because James defeated him with violence.

Because nobody wanted to be ruled by the man he had become.
