Chapter 16

Two weeks later, Emily moved permanently into the east wing of the Bennett estate.

Not into her childhood bedroom.

She chose a different room.

That mattered.

James offered guards, nurses, cooks, and three different nursery arrangements until Emily finally laughed and told him to stop commanding the pregnancy like a military campaign.

He did.

Mostly.

The nursery door stayed open.

No locks.

No keys.

One afternoon, Emily found the small brass key from Linda’s pocket sitting on James’s desk.

She picked it up.

“You kept this too?”

James looked embarrassed.

“I forgot.”

She knew he had not.

The key meant failure to him.

The room he did not know existed.

The door he had not opened until his daughter was already bruised behind it.

Emily turned it over in her fingers.

Then placed it in a drawer.

She left the drawer unlocked.

James watched.

“That’s it?”

“What did you want me to do? Throw it into the ocean?”

He almost smiled.

“Something dramatic.”

“You have enough drama.”

That made him laugh.

A real laugh.

Small.

Rare.

Emily looked toward the nursery.

“You know what I want from now on?”

“What?”

“If I say I’m fine, ask twice.”

James nodded.

“And if I still say I’m fine?”

“Ask again?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“Trust me. Just make sure I know I can change my answer.”

James absorbed that.

Harder than an order.

More useful.

Later that evening, he passed the open nursery door and saw Emily asleep in the chair with one hand over her stomach.

The pink teddy bear sat on the crib shelf.

James stopped.

Then kept walking.

He did not enter.

He did not check.

He did not wake her to make sure she was safe.

For the first time, protecting his daughter meant allowing peace to exist without touching it.
