Chapter 14

Emily returned to the apartment once.
Only once.
James went with her.
She wanted her clothes, a framed photograph of Sarah, and the small blanket she had bought for the baby before Ryan began controlling what she could bring into the bedroom.
Ryan watched from the hallway.
He had become strangely quiet.
Emily entered the locked room herself.
The chair was still there.
So was the broken phone.
The lamp.
The recorder.
She stood in the doorway for a long time.
James remained behind her.
He did not step inside until she looked back and nodded.
That mattered too.
Emily picked up the prenatal vitamins from the dresser.
Then the tiny pair of baby socks beside them.
Ryan spoke from behind James.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily turned.
He looked exhausted.
Maybe even sincere.
But sincerity arriving after consequences did not erase choice.
“For what?” she asked.
Ryan swallowed.
“For hurting you.”
Emily waited.
Then he added, “I was scared of Caleb.”
There it was.
Another explanation.
Not responsibility.
“If Caleb had disappeared six weeks ago,” Emily asked, “would you have stopped?”
Ryan said nothing.
She understood.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
The uncertainty was enough.
Linda appeared farther down the hallway.
“You’re really going to destroy a marriage over this?”
Emily looked at her.
Linda continued.
“Families go through hard things. You don’t run home to Daddy every time your husband loses his temper.”
James started forward.
Emily touched his arm.
Then answered herself.
“I’m not going home because Ryan lost his temper.”
She looked at the locked room.
“I’m going home because both of you taught me exactly what staying would cost.”
Linda’s face hardened.
Emily walked past her carrying the baby blanket.
James followed.
The brass key remained in his pocket.
May you like
He no longer needed it.
The door behind them was open.
