Chapter 9

The absolute finality of Gabriel’s questions echoed cleanly off the carved walnut paneling, sealing Serena’s fate. The grand, luminous dining hall, bathed in the soft elegant warmth of the cascading crystal chandeliers, felt suddenly like a courtroom where a death sentence had just been handed down.

Serena took a stumbling step backward, her high heels catching on the thick patterned rug. The sculpted wine-red satin of her evening gown seemed to lose its luster. She looked across the table at the man she had believed she could manipulate, realizing far too late that she had awakened a sleeping dragon.

"What are you going to do?" Serena whispered, genuine, unadulterated fear finally bleeding into her eyes.

"Am I required to explain the consequences of treason to a traitor?" Gabriel asked smoothly, entirely unaffected by her panic.

He didn't wait for her pathetic, scrambling answer. He slowly turned his broad, powerful shoulders, breaking his terrifying focus on Serena, and looked back down at the two women he was protecting.

Helen was weeping silently, her fragile shoulders shaking beneath her soft cashmere cardigan. The terror of the confrontation was overwhelming for the seventy-four-year-old woman, but the relief of finally being heard, of finally being saved by her son, was absolute.

Lydia remained steadfast by the matriarch's side. The beautiful housemaid’s expressive brows were drawn together in deep empathy. Her slender figure stood as a graceful pillar of strength in her sophisticated black maid dress. She had risked her entire livelihood, and potentially her life, to protect the vulnerable woman.

Gabriel looked directly into Lydia’s eyes. The artistic tattoos across his hands flexed slightly as he rested his palm on the back of his mother's velvet chair.

"Are you unharmed, Lydia?" Gabriel asked, his deep voice returning to a warm, comforting rumble.

"I am fine, Mr. Rook," Lydia replied, her American accent steady and respectful. "I am just relieved your mother is safe."

"Do you understand the magnitude of the debt I owe you tonight?" Gabriel asked, looking deeply into her softly oval face.

Lydia’s fair, rosy cheeks flushed a delicate pink under his intense, perceptive gaze. "I only did what was right, sir. I couldn't let her go hungry."

"Is bravery not the rarest commodity in our world?" Gabriel questioned, bowing his head slightly in a profound gesture of respect.

He slowly turned his head back toward the center of the room. The guests remained perfectly silent, paralyzed by the swift, methodical destruction of the bride-to-be.

"Is this engagement dinner concluded?" Gabriel asked the room at large.

The question was rhetorical, a lethal command disguised as an inquiry. The guests immediately understood. Chairs scraped softly against the polished marble floors as the most powerful men and women in the American mafia stood up in unison. They didn't speak. They didn't offer their goodbyes or polite pleasantries. They simply turned and began a swift, silent exodus from the luminous dining hall, eager to escape the blast radius of the Boss's impending wrath.
