Chapter 3

The continuous, muted clatter of silver cutlery against porcelain provided a rhythmic backdrop to the elegant dinner party. The tall ivory candles flickered gently, casting warm golden reflections across the gilded mirrors and polished marble floors. The luxurious, intimate atmosphere of the dining hall felt entirely secure to the wealthy guests, but the air immediately surrounding the head of the table was thick with an unspoken, suffocating tension.

Lydia stepped back, her hands resting neatly against her crisp white apron. She watched as Helen lowered her heavy silver fork, entirely abandoning the pretense of trying to cut the steak.

The seventy-four-year-old woman looked down at the steaming bowl of creamy soup. Slowly, Helen turned her head and looked up at the beautiful housemaid. A faint, fragile, and profoundly grateful smile touched the matriarch's lips. Her faded eyes were visibly moist, shining with the deep embarrassment of her situation and the overwhelming relief of being silently understood and cared for.

"Thank you, my dear," Helen breathed, her voice so soft it was almost entirely absorbed by the ambient noise of the room.

Lydia offered a subtle, reassuring nod, her expressive brows drawing together in quiet empathy. She had taken immense care not to draw attention to the untouched food, hoping the substitution would go entirely unnoticed by the apex predators in the room.

But Gabriel Rook missed absolutely nothing.

The Mafia boss stood perfectly still beside his chair. His cold, perceptive eyes tracked every micro-expression, every subtle movement within his immediate vicinity. He noticed the pristine, untouched steak resting on his mother's plate. Then, his gaze shifted, observing the profound, meticulous care the young housemaid took not to draw the room's attention to the elderly woman's sudden dietary limitation.

The bright, luminous lighting of the room seemed to sharpen, acting as a high-definition spotlight on the silent interaction. The loose strands of slightly wavy hair falling over Gabriel's forehead cast no shadows, but the sheer gravity of his presence seemed to darken the space immediately surrounding him.

Gabriel slowly turned his head. He looked away from his mother and locked his terrifying, perceptive gaze directly onto Lydia’s softly oval face.

The air in the room seemed to freeze.

“Lydia. Why can’t she eat?”

Gabriel’s voice was quiet, deep, and impossibly deliberate. The question dropped into the silent, luminous room like a heavy stone into still water.

Every single guest at the massive, crowded table stopped eating and speaking. The melodic hum of polite conversations died completely. Men in expensive formal wear and women in satin gowns turned their heads in unison, their fair, rosy faces locking onto the head of the table. The silence was absolute, heavy with the terrifying realization that the Mafia boss had just halted his own engagement dinner.
