Chapter 7

The medium wide shot framed the immediate, terrifying fallout of Helen’s softly spoken confession. The bright, airy colors of the dining hall felt suddenly stark, exposing the raw, underlying brutality of the situation. Gabriel stood as a towering monument of lethal calculation, shielding his blood and the woman who had spoken for her.
Serena realized the narrative had slipped entirely from her manicured grasp. She was backed into a corner, completely exposed beneath the luminous, warm golden light of the chandeliers. The eyes of dozens of powerful, dangerous men and women were fixed upon her, waiting to see how she would survive the absolute ruin of her reputation.
"Gabriel, she is confused!" Serena shrieked, her American accent pitching up into a shrill, defensive frequency. She entirely abandoned her polished social poise. She pointed a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the matriarch. "I didn't take anything from her! She is imagining things! She has been hostile toward me since the day I arrived!"
"Do confused minds invent specific promises, Serena?" Gabriel asked. His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like a physical blow.
"She hates me!" Serena cried, her chest heaving beneath the sculpted satin of her evening gown. "And that maid—she put her up to this! They conspired to ruin this dinner to make me look like a monster in front of your friends!"
"Are you suggesting that my mother and my housemaid coordinated a theatrical performance regarding stolen medical equipment simply to spite you?" Gabriel inquired, his tone dropping even lower, completely devoid of any warmth.
Serena’s sympathetic, reassuring smile began to fade rapidly, melting away into a mask of pure, unadulterated terror. "Yes! You know how protective she is of you! She doesn't want another woman in this house!"
"Is it protective to starve oneself, or is it the desperate reaction of a woman stripped of her dignity?" Gabriel asked smoothly, tilting his head a fraction of an inch. The extremely short stubble on his jawline caught the golden light, highlighting the lethal tension in his facial muscles.
Gabriel didn't move an inch. He stood between the two women, an immovable force of masculine authority.
"I was trying to help her!" Serena sobbed, attempting to pivot her strategy. "She dropped them in the hallway! I picked them up to clean them, and I simply forgot to return them in the chaos of preparing for the dinner! It was an honest mistake!"

"Does an honest mistake require you to lie to my face in front of fifty armed men?" Gabriel questioned, his voice echoing cleanly off the carved walnut walls and gilded mirrors.
The guests remained absolutely silent and attentive, paralyzed by the public interrogation of the future bride. The trap had been sprung, and Serena was thrashing wildly against the bars, every word pulling her deeper into the abyss.
