Chapter 8

The camera held the agonizing tension of the scene. The bright, clear lighting of the dining room offered Serena no place to hide. Gabriel’s cold, perceptive eyes settled slowly and with absolute, devastating finality on the woman he had planned to marry. The elegant, warm golden atmosphere of the mansion felt instantly contaminated by the revelation of such calculated, systemic cruelty.
Gabriel waited a brief beat, letting the suffocating silence crush whatever remaining defenses Serena possessed.
“What else did you take?”
Gabriel’s voice dropped lower, the acoustic weight of the question vibrating through the polished marble floors. Each word was measured, precise, and loaded with apocalyptic danger. It was not just an inquiry about physical objects; it was a profound demand to uncover the entire scope of her psychological and emotional abuse.
Serena’s lips pressed tightly together. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking sickly and translucent. She swallowed hard, the diamond earrings trembling against her jawline as her breathing became ragged.
She could not answer immediately. Her eyes moved frantically toward Helen, who was sitting quietly behind the impenetrable wall of her son's dark suit. She looked at the frail, elderly woman, searching for a hint of mercy, a sudden recantation of the truth. But Helen kept her chin lowered, refusing to engage with her tormentor any longer.
Serena’s panicked gaze then moved back to Gabriel. She searched his handsome, angular face, desperately looking for an explanation he might accept—a lie that wouldn't immediately seal her fate.
"Gabriel, darling, please," Serena whispered, her voice a fragile, pathetic breath. "I haven't taken anything else. I swear it. I just wanted to manage the household efficiently. She was becoming so difficult."
"Is difficulty managed through theft and humiliation?" Gabriel asked, his hands clasping casually behind his back.
"I was protecting our image!" Serena argued, tears of panic finally spilling over her fair cheeks, ruining her pristine makeup. "In our world, weakness is a liability! If the other families see her struggling, they will think you are distracted! I was protecting you!"
"Do you believe my empire is so fragile that it requires the torture of an old woman to remain secure?" Gabriel inquired, his gaze piercing straight through her lies.
"I am a Ellery!" Serena shouted, desperation clawing at her throat. "My family brings the eastern ports to this alliance! You need me, Gabriel! You cannot humiliate me like this over a pair of dentures!"

"Are a few shipping lanes worth the price of my mother's tears?" Gabriel asked, his cold eyes narrowing into dark, lethal slits.
A heavy, terrifying realization settled over the room. The Mafia boss was not negotiating. He was not managing a domestic dispute. He was passing judgment, and the penalty for high treason within the family was absolute.
