Chapter 4

The silence in the grand dining hall was absolute, a suffocating vacuum that absorbed the soft, elegant warmth of the crystal chandeliers. The bright, airy colors of the room felt suddenly charged with an explosive, high-voltage tension. The clean whites of the table linens and the polished highlights of the silver cutlery shimmered beneath the warm golden light, a stark contrast to the dark reality of the confrontation about to unfold.

Lydia froze. Her heart plummeted into her stomach, hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She was entirely exposed beneath the bright, golden glow, trapped between the man who owned the city and the woman who was about to marry him.

Upon hearing her son's deliberate, terrifying question, Helen’s frail fingers tightened violently around the white damask napkin resting in her lap. Her knuckles turned white from the pressure. She looked down, profoundly ashamed.

Lydia took a shallow, shaky breath. Her slender figure straightened slightly beneath the sophisticated black maid dress. She looked into Gabriel's cold, perceptive eyes and saw an unwavering, terrifying demand for the truth.

If she spoke the truth, Serena would undoubtedly ensure her immediate termination, or worse, have her blacklisted and thrown out onto the streets. But looking into Gabriel Rook's eyes, Lydia realized that lying to him carried a far more absolute, fatal consequence.

Maintaining direct, unwavering eye contact with Gabriel, Lydia made her choice.

“Her dentures are missing.”

Lydia answered softly. Her voice was incredibly fragile and breathless, yet it broke the ringing silence of the room like a shattering crystal glass. The words were a quiet, devastating detonation.

Her inner brows lifted anxiously, an expression of helpless, profound vulnerability. She swallowed hard after speaking, the muscles in her throat contracting visibly beneath the crisp white collar of her uniform.

For a fraction of a second, the heavy, terrifying weight of the room pressed down on her. Lydia briefly broke eye contact with the towering Mafia boss, looking down toward Helen in a silent apology for exposing the woman's deepest embarrassment to the entire syndicate. Then, drawing on every ounce of her remaining courage, she returned her gaze directly to Gabriel, refusing to cower.

A collective, stifled gasp rippled through the gathered relatives and associates. To state that the matriarch of the Rook family was missing a vital, personal medical necessity during a public banquet was a horrifying revelation. It implied severe neglect, or worse, deliberate cruelty within the walls of the impenetrable estate.

Across the table, Serena Ellery stopped breathing. Her fair, rosy skin paled slightly under the warm golden light. She realized the narrative she had so carefully constructed was slipping rapidly from her manicured grasp.
