Chapter 1

The engagement dinner of Gabriel Rook was a spectacle of absolute, unyielding perfection. The grand dining hall of the Rook mansion was bathed in bright, airy, luminous colors, exuding a soft, elegant warmth that felt both inviting and profoundly intimidating. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the soaring ceilings, spreading a continuous, warm golden light across the carved walnut walls and the towering marble columns. There were no dark shadows, no muddy orange tints, and no heavy yellow casts to obscure the faces of the elite guests. Every inch of the room was clearly illuminated, reflecting off the gilded mirrors and the polished marble floors.
Gathered around the massive, long dining table were the most powerful figures of the American underworld. They were all white Americans, their fair, rosy skin glowing with health and untouchable privilege. The table itself was a masterpiece of cream and gold. Tall ivory candles burned steadily in gleaming silver candelabras, casting dancing reflections over white damask linens, gold-rimmed porcelain, and sparkling crystal stemware. Low, sprawling arrangements of pristine white roses filled the air with a delicate, sweet fragrance that masked the lethal, calculating nature of the men and women seated in the champagne velvet chairs.
At the head of this breathtaking display stood Gabriel Rook. At forty-four, the Mafia boss was a man of staggering, movie-star-handsome masculinity. His broad, powerful shoulders easily filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. He possessed an angular face with a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jawline, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell casually over his forehead, offering a deceptive softness to his cold, perceptive eyes. Refined artistic tattoos stretched across his hands and fingers, utilizing generous negative space, matching a small, elegant neck tattoo visible above his pristine white collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand, catching the light alongside a luxury wristwatch and his polished leather shoes.
"The arrangements tonight are flawless, Gabriel," a senior capo remarked, his crisp American accent carrying over the sophisticated hum of the crowded party. "You spare no expense for your beautiful bride."
Gabriel slowly turned his signet ring. "Is there any reason to celebrate an engagement with mediocrity, Thomas?"
His deep, low voice rolled through the space, punctuated by perfectly controlled pauses. It was a known, terrifying quirk of the boss; his dialogue consisted exclusively of questions, forcing everyone around him into a constant state of justification.
Standing opposite him was Serena Ellery. At thirty-two, his fiancée was the picture of aristocratic privilege. She wore a sculpted wine-red satin gown that accentuated her fair complexion and slender figure. Diamond earrings sparkled brilliantly against her jawline, matching the heavy engagement ring on her finger.

"Gabriel is a perfectionist," Serena laughed smoothly, her voice melodic. "It is what makes him such a formidable leader. We wanted tonight to be a seamless reflection of our future."
"Does a seamless future require us to ignore the foundations we are built upon?" Gabriel inquired, his cold eyes shifting toward her for a fraction of a second before scanning the rest of the luminous room.
