Chapter 9

Adrian asked Rosaline to curate a small private evening.

She almost refused.

Not because she lacked interest.

Because Gareth had contaminated the room.

Collectors.

Velvet tables.

Questions.

Eyes.

I told her:

“You don’t owe anyone recovery on schedule.”

She nodded.

Then accepted anyway.

Her choice.

The evening included twelve people.

No Gareth.

No Posy performance.

Posy attended for ten minutes wearing sneakers under her dress.

Rosaline told one story about Elena.

A ruby brooch her mother once wore while planting tomatoes because she forgot it was still pinned to her coat.

Adrian laughed.

The room relaxed.

Then Rosaline forgot the date the brooch was made.

She stopped.

Old fear.

I saw it.

So did Posy.

My granddaughter whispered loudly:

“Wrong okay.”

Everyone heard.

Rosaline laughed.

Then continued.

That became the evening’s true restoration.

Not perfect knowledge.

Permission to be wrong without punishment.

Afterward Adrian told me:

“Elena would’ve liked tonight.”

I answered:

“Tell Rosaline.”

So he did.

May you like

Directly.

No more men exchanging opinions about women while the woman stood nearby.
