Chapter 5

I ended the reception.

Guests did not protest.

Good.

Adrian stayed because I asked.

So did four other collectors Gareth had approached repeatedly.

Not to humiliate him.

To correct the record while everyone responsible for believing the false version was still present.

Rosaline sat beside me.

Posy slept against her shoulder.

I asked my daughter:

“Do you want Gareth speaking for you in any part of your mother’s collection?”

“No.”

Clear.

“Do you want to withdraw from collector events?”

“No.”

“Do you want fewer?”

“Sometimes.”

Fine.

Human answer.

“Do you want Gareth deciding which?”

“No.”

Done.

I looked at the collectors.

“There is your answer.”

No speeches.

No ceremony.

Adrian nodded first.

Then apologized directly to Rosaline.

Not:

I was deceived.

He said:

“I should have asked you.”

Correct.

Another collector, Lydia Marrow, admitted Gareth had shown her photographs of Rosaline looking pale after dinners.

He called them evidence of anxiety.

Rosaline laughed bitterly.

“I was pale because he’d spent the car ride telling me what would happen if I contradicted him.”

There.

Image plus narrative.

Powerful combination.

Lydia looked sick.

Gareth muttered:

“You’re all acting like she never needed help.”

Rosaline turned.

“I needed help from you.”

Silence.

“Not replacement by you.”

That landed harder than anything I could say.

Then she lifted her shawl fully.

Both wrists.

Bruises on one.

Older marks on the other.

No hiding.

No shame.

The collectors saw.

Adrian stood.

Walked toward Gareth.

For a second I expected violence.

Instead he removed a small velvet invitation card from his pocket.

An upcoming private exhibition.

He tore it in half.

Then placed it on the table.

“I invited you because I believed you represented Rosaline.”

Gareth stared.

Adrian continued.

“You represent yourself.”

May you like

Good.

That was the first door closing.
