Chapter 17

Five years after the jewelry reception, Posy stood beside me at another private showroom.
Eight years old.
Still uninterested in most jewelry.
She wore the ugly bracelet with the yellow star because apparently it had become important precisely by avoiding importance.
A young collector admired it.
“Beautiful.”
Posy looked suspicious.
“It’s messy.”
The woman smiled.
“That can still be beautiful.”
Posy accepted that.
Good.
Across the room Rosaline spoke with Adrian.
Confident.
Laughing.
No shawl over her wrists.
No Gareth beside her feeding answers.
Gareth attended too.
Invited because Posy asked.
He stood near the back.
Not controlling the room.
Just present.
Then Posy walked to him.
Held out another small bracelet.
My body tightened automatically.
Memory.
Gareth’s did too.
He looked at her.
“Is this for me?”
“Yes.”
He took it carefully.
Did not inspect.
Did not correct.
Did not ask whether she stayed up all night.
He simply put it around his wrist.
Too small.
It barely fit.
He wore it anyway.
Posy grinned.
Then ran off.
Rosaline saw.
Our eyes met.
Nothing needed saying.
Five years earlier, Gareth destroyed a child’s gift because he could only see failure where she offered love.
That was the whole family sickness in miniature.
He looked at Rosaline and saw access.
At Elena’s collection and saw status.
At Posy and saw legacy.
At mistakes and saw humiliation.
Everything had to become useful.
Controlled.
Impressive.
Now the bracelet on his wrist was crooked.
Cheap.
Too tight.
Perfectly useless.
Exactly as a gift should be.
I looked around the showroom.
Collectors talking.
Rosaline choosing which stories to tell.
Posy eating strawberries beside jewelry worth millions.
No one testing her.
No one punishing her mother.
No one requiring a little girl to become a symbol before she was allowed to be loved.
And when Posy knocked over an empty display cushion a few minutes later, she froze for half a second.
Old memory.
Then looked toward Rosaline.
Rosaline smiled.
“Pick it up, sweetheart.”
That was all.
No punishment.
No bruise.
No lesson.
Posy set the cushion back crooked.
Then ran away.
May you like
I left it crooked.
So did everyone else.
