Chapter 5

The standoff on the low presentation platform felt like an eternity. The cinematic, neutral white light pouring through the ballroom windows cast long, sharp shadows behind them. Benedict released Evelina’s wrist with a sudden, dismissive flick, as if discarding something filthy. She stumbled backward, her heels skidding against the polished wood of the platform, nearly losing her balance before crashing her hips against an upholstered chair.

Benedict did not look at her as she fell. He raised his right hand, the hand now gripping the solid wooden auction gavel.

With a single, devastating motion, Benedict brought the gavel down hard onto the wooden auction block resting on the table.

CRACK.

The sound was thunderous, an explosive detonation of wood against wood that violently ruptured the suffocating tension of the room. The sheer masculine force behind the strike sent the heavy wooden block skidding across the polished tabletop. It slid aggressively until it slammed to a halt against the heavy silver serving tray.

The sharp, echoing crack completely silenced the ballroom. The whispers, the shifting feet, the clinking of glasses—everything ceased instantly. Two hundred of the most powerful white American elite froze in place, their rosy faces turning pale under the brilliant light.

Evelina flinched backward, her spine pressing hard against the backrest of the upholstered chair. Her hands flew up to protect her face, genuinely believing for a fraction of a second that the blow had been meant for her. Her chest heaved in frantic, shallow breaths.

Benedict slowly opened his hand, leaving the wooden gavel resting on the table beside the shattered porcelain vase. He did not need a weapon. His presence alone was lethal enough.

He stood tall, adjusting the lapels of his dark, three-piece suit. He slowly raised his left hand, holding the unopened, wax-sealed envelope up to the crisp, bright light. He examined the thick paper, noting the lack of a crest on the dark wax, recognizing the hallmarks of a clandestine, highly secure communication.

There was no dialogue. The overwhelming silence of the ballroom was a testament to his absolute power. He had commanded the total, unwavering attention of every single soul in the mansion without uttering a single syllable.

Benedict lowered the envelope slightly, his dark, calculating eyes tracking back to the trembling woman cowering against the upholstered chair. Evelina was staring at the envelope as if it were a live grenade with the pin pulled. The terrified, guilty panic on her fair face told him everything he needed to know. The envelope was not just a secret; it was a betrayal of the highest magnitude. And Benedict Thornmere was a man who punished betrayal with absolute destruction.
