Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Thornmere estate was a masterpiece of architectural brilliance, flooded with natural, cinematic lighting that poured through towering floor-to-ceiling windows. There was no trace of a dull, yellow tint in the air; the light was crisp, cool, and perfectly white, illuminating the bright, vivid colors of the opulent charity reception. The guests, an elite gathering of wealthy white American relatives and associates, mingled in the flawless daylight. Their fair, rosy skin glowed with the healthy flush of privilege and expensive champagne. Crisp American accents murmured over the clinking of crystal glasses, creating a sophisticated hum that masked the underlying tension of the Thornmere syndicate.

At the front of the ballroom, a low presentation platform had been erected beside a heavily draped auction table. Standing on the platform was three-year-old Orla Thornmere. Her fair, rosy cheeks were pale with anxiety, her small frame swallowed by the grandeur of the room. She wore a pristine, formal white party dress, a soft pink cardigan, and polished little flats. Her blue eyes, wide and terrified, darted around the sea of towering adults.

Beside her stood Evelina. At thirty-eight years old, Benedict Thornmere’s fiancée was a striking vision of American high society. She wore a breathtaking sapphire evening gown that clung to her figure, her fair skin adorned with heavy, glittering diamond earrings and a massive engagement ring that caught the bright sunlight. In her right hand, she held a small, polished wooden auction gavel.

"Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention!" Evelina called out, her voice bright, projecting effortlessly over the crowd with a flawless American accent.

The murmurs died down. All eyes turned toward the platform. Evelina reached over to the auction table, her manicured hands gripping a massive, solid silver serving tray. With a forceful, unyielding motion, she planted the heavy silver tray directly into three-year-old Orla’s tiny hands.

The sheer weight of the metal caused Orla’s elbows to sag instantly. The little girl’s knees buckled slightly as she struggled to keep the tray from crashing to the floor. Tears welled in her eyes, her rosy complexion turning red with exertion and humiliation.

Evelina did not help her. Instead, she struck the auction gavel sharply against the wooden table. Crack.

"Who wants a servant?" Evelina announced brightly, a delighted, cruel smile stretching across her perfect face. She gestured toward the struggling toddler with a theatrical sweep of her hand. "She owes me a vase, and I think it is only fair she works off her debt!"

A ripple of uncomfortable, hesitant laughter spread through the crowd of wealthy associates. Some thought it was a bizarre party joke; others recognized the sheer, unadulterated malice behind Evelina's glittering eyes. On the table beside them, resting in a shallow display tray, lay the shattered, jagged remains of an antique porcelain vase.

"Please," Orla whimpered softly, her arms trembling violently under the polished silver. "It's too heavy."

"Keep it steady, Orla," Evelina muttered under her breath, her smile never faltering for the audience. "You break things, you pay for them. That is how the real world works."
