Chapter 2

The bright, cinematic colors of the ballroom seemed to freeze as the heavy, rhythmic thud of polished leather shoes echoed against the marble floor. The crowd of wealthy American guests parted instantly, stepping back in a wave of sudden, suffocating reverence and deeply ingrained fear.
Benedict Thornmere was approaching the platform. At forty-seven years old, the patriarch of the family exuded a powerful, deeply masculine, and terrifyingly intimidating presence. He possessed the raw, undeniable aura of a veteran Mafia boss. He was impeccably dressed in a tailored dark three-piece suit, a crisp white dress shirt, and a heavy, dark overcoat draped perfectly over his broad shoulders. A heavy gold signet ring rested on his finger, and a luxury wristwatch caught the brilliant white daylight. His fair, rosy face was carved from granite, his eyes dark and completely devoid of mercy.
He did not rush, but he closed the distance with the lethal, measured grace of an apex predator. He stepped onto the low presentation platform, utterly ignoring the murmuring crowd.
"Benedict, darling," Evelina began, her bright smile faltering for a fraction of a second. "We were just having a little fun for the charity—"
Benedict completely bypassed his fiancée. He stepped directly beside his daughter. Without a single word, he reached out with his large, powerful hands and effortlessly took the massive silver serving tray from Orla’s trembling grip. He held the heavy metal with one hand as if it weighed absolutely nothing. With his other hand, he gently took Orla by the shoulder and helped her step down from the elevated platform to the solid floor.
Orla immediately turned to him, her tiny chest heaving with suppressed sobs. She looked up at Benedict, her lower lip trembling uncontrollably.
"Daddy…" Orla whispered, her small, frightened voice breaking the heavy silence of the immediate space. She pointed a tiny, shaking finger toward the shattered porcelain resting in the shallow display tray. "I didn't even touch it. I promise."
Benedict’s jaw tightened. The muscles in his neck corded beneath his crisp dress shirt. He knew his daughter. He knew she did not lie, and he knew the sheer, unadulterated terror in her eyes was genuine.
He slowly turned his head. His dark, piercing gaze cut through the bright, natural light and locked sharply onto Evelina.
"She didn't touch it," Benedict stated. His voice was a low, resonant rumble, an American accent stripped of all polite societal pretense. It was a statement of absolute fact.

Evelina’s delighted smile tightened instantly, the corners of her mouth straining against her fair skin. "Benedict, please. The nanny saw her running near the table. Children break things. It is entirely fine, I was simply trying to teach her a lesson in accountability."
"You do not teach my daughter," Benedict replied, his voice dropping another octave into a register of pure, terrifying ice. "And you certainly do not humiliate her in front of my associates."
