Chapter 10

The silence that returned to the ballroom was absolute, heavy with the terrifying reality of the power they had just witnessed. The wealthy American guests stood frozen, their fair, rosy skin pale, entirely unsure if they were allowed to breathe. The bright, cinematic daylight continued to pour through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the shattered porcelain vase, the heavy silver tray, and the crushed wooden gavel resting on the auction table.
Benedict Thornmere stood in the center of the room, adjusting his dark overcoat. He exuded an aura of total, unquestionable authority. He had just uncovered a massive conspiracy, neutralized a traitor, and prepared for a syndicate war, all without raising his voice above a conversational rumble.
He slowly turned around, his cold, sharp eyes softening entirely as he looked down.
Three-year-old Orla was still standing there, her small hands gripping the fabric of his trousers. Her beautiful, formal party dress was unruffled, but her blue eyes were wide with the residual fear of the chaotic afternoon.
Benedict knelt down on the polished marble floor, utterly disregarding his tailored suit. He reached out and gently pulled his daughter into his arms, holding her securely against his broad chest. He closed his eyes, inhaling the sweet, innocent scent of her hair, grounding himself in the only thing that truly mattered.
"Are the bad people gone, Daddy?" Orla whispered, her tiny voice trembling slightly as she rested her head on his shoulder.
"Yes, my sweet girl," Benedict murmured, his deep voice vibrating with warm, paternal love. "The bad people are gone. And they are never, ever coming back."
"I didn't break the vase," Orla repeated softly, still seeking his reassurance.
"I know you didn't," Benedict promised, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "You are a good girl. You are perfectly safe."
He stood up, lifting Orla effortlessly into his left arm. She wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face into his crisp dress shirt. Benedict turned to face the terrified crowd of guests. The transition from loving father back to ruthless Mafia boss was instantaneous.
"The charity reception is officially concluded," Benedict announced, his voice ringing with crisp, lethal authority. "My guards will escort you all to your vehicles. I expect every single one of you to forget what you saw here today. If a single word of this reaches the press, or the authorities... I will know exactly who spoke."
No one dared to argue. The guests began moving toward the exits in a hurried, terrified silence, desperate to escape the gravitational pull of the Thornmere patriarch.

Benedict watched them leave, his right hand resting inside his overcoat, his fingers brushing against the encrypted security schematics in his breast pocket. The Chicago outfit had tried to infiltrate his home. They had tried to use the woman in his bed to dismantle his empire. They had fundamentally underestimated the wrath of a father protecting his child.
He walked slowly toward his private study, holding his daughter close to his chest in the bright, cinematic light. The betrayal had been uncovered, but the real war was only just beginning. And Benedict Thornmere was ready to burn the city to the ground to ensure his family remained untouched.
