Chapter 3

The tension in the brightly lit ballroom escalated into a suffocating, palpable force. The natural daylight pouring through the windows illuminated every subtle twitch of Evelina’s facial muscles. The fair, rosy skin of her neck flushed a deep, anxious pink beneath her diamond necklace.

Benedict did not break eye contact with his fiancée as he moved. He slowly lowered his right arm, placing the heavy silver serving tray onto the wooden auction table. He set it down with deliberate force, the metallic clatter ringing sharply in the quiet room.

As the edge of the heavy silver tray met the tabletop, it nudged the shallow display tray holding the shattered porcelain. The impact was slight, but it was enough. The heavy, hollow base of the broken vase lost its precarious balance. It rolled onto its side with a dull, ceramic scraping sound.

From the dark, hollow cavity of the broken porcelain base, a small, thick, sealed envelope slipped out. It fell flat against the velvet lining of the display tray, completely exposed in the brilliant, unyielding light of the ballroom.

"What is that?" Benedict asked, his voice deathly quiet.

Evelina’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic. The elegant, controlled mask of the society fiancée shattered into a million pieces. The breath hitched violently in her throat. She abandoned all pretense of elegance and immediately lunged forward, her high heels scraping aggressively against the platform.

She reached her manicured hand across the table, desperately swiping toward the velvet tray.

"Leave that alone!" Evelina shrieked, her voice panicked and shrill, completely devoid of her earlier, polished tone. "It is nothing! It's just trash!"

"Trash does not hide inside the hollow base of an antique vase," Benedict countered smoothly.

Before Evelina’s diamond-studded fingers could even graze the thick paper, Benedict’s hand shot forward. With the effortless, blinding speed of a man who had survived decades in a violent underworld, he snatched the envelope from the tray.

He held it up to the crisp, natural light. It was sealed with heavy, dark wax. There was no writing on the outside, no identifying marks. It was a dead drop. A secret communication hidden in plain sight, completely insulated by the chaos of a charity auction.

"Give it to me, Benedict!" Evelina demanded, her chest heaving as she stared at the envelope in his hand. "It is private! You have no right to look at my personal belongings!"

"Your personal belongings?" Benedict murmured, his American accent laced with a lethal curiosity. He kept Orla safely tucked behind his long, dark overcoat. "I thought you just said it was trash. Which is it, Evelina?"

Evelina’s fair face contorted with desperation. The bright colors of her sapphire gown seemed to blur as she realized the catastrophic nature of what had just been uncovered. She had pushed too far, and now, her own trap had snapped shut around her ankle.
