Chapter 9

The silence in the boardroom was absolute, broken only by the sound of the thick legal documents hitting the mahogany table with a heavy, definitive thud.

Silas stared at the papers, his battered face registering total incomprehension. "Apex Holdings? That’s a multi-billion dollar private equity firm! They don't even operate in our sector! Why would they launch a hostile takeover on us overnight?"

"They acquired your debt," the lawyer explained smoothly, his American accent crisp and devoid of any emotion. "Over the past three years, Apex has been quietly buying up the promissory notes, leverage margins, and outstanding loans associated with every single member of this family. You were highly over-leveraged, Robert. You put the company up as collateral to maintain your extravagant lifestyle."

"I have a grace period!" Robert roared, spittle flying from his lips as he lunged toward the table, grabbing the papers. "I have thirty days to restructure! They can't just freeze my assets!"

"The grace period was contingent on maintaining a minimum liquidity threshold," the lawyer countered without flinching. "At 5:00 AM, Apex Holdings called in a two-hundred-million-dollar marker on Silas's venture funds. When those funds defaulted, it triggered a cascading margin call across the entire Sterling portfolio. You are bankrupt. Completely and utterly insolvent."

Clara let out a horrifying, breathless sob, her legs giving out as she collapsed into one of the leather chairs. "Everything? My houses? The cars?"

"Everything purchased through the family trust is currently being seized by federal auditors," the lawyer confirmed.

Robert’s chest heaved, his rosy skin turning a sickly shade of gray as the reality of his total ruination began to set in. Decades of ruthless manipulation, backroom deals, and corporate dominance, eradicated in a matter of hours.

"Who?" Robert rasped, leaning heavily against the table, his arrogance finally broken. "Who is the CEO of Apex Holdings? I demand to speak to him. I can negotiate. I can offer a merger."

The lawyer adjusted his glasses, a faint, almost pitying smile touching his lips.

"I'm afraid the CEO does not negotiate, Robert," the lawyer said. "And as for his identity... I believe he gave you a hint last night."

Silas froze, his hand instinctively flying up to his shattered nose. The memory of the previous night flashed in his mind—the shattered wooden horse, the falling tree, and the icy, devastating voice of his younger brother standing at the door.

My Christmas gift to you all is quite simple. Just wait until tomorrow... you'll see.

May you like

"No," Silas whispered, his voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated terror. "No, that’s impossible. Bennett doesn't have that kind of money. He’s nothing!"

"Bennett Sterling is the sole founder and primary shareholder of Apex Holdings," the lawyer stated clearly, delivering the final, fatal blow. "He asked me to pass along a message. He said to tell you he hopes you enjoy your Christmas present. He pulled it right out of the trash."
