Chapter 5

The grand living room was paralyzed in a state of absolute shock. The only sounds were the heavy, ragged gasps coming from Silas as he writhed beneath the fallen Christmas tree, and the faint, electrical hiss of a broken string of white lights shorting out against the hardwood floor.

Bennett did not spare a single glance for his bleeding brother. He smoothly reached down, his large, capable hand gently wrapping around Josephine’s small, trembling fingers. He squeezed her hand reassuringly, shielding her vision from the wreckage with his own body. Without a word of hesitation, he turned his back on the stunned family and began walking toward the heavy oak double doors leading to the foyer.

"Bennett!" Robert suddenly roared, his voice shaking with a mixture of disbelief and mounting, apoplectic rage. The patriarch finally found his footing, stepping over the shattered remains of his crystal glass. "You ungrateful bastard! You think you can walk into my house, assault your brother, and just turn your back on me? You are finished! I will strip you of every dime!"

Bennett stopped. His hand rested on the brass handle of the grand doorway.

Slowly, deliberately, he turned his head to look back at the room.

The bright, non-yellowing lights overhead cast harsh, dramatic shadows across his handsome features. His eyes were icy, devoid of any familial warmth, reflecting the cold, calculating mind of a predator who had just finished playing with its prey. He looked at Clara, who was trembling in her elegant dress. He looked at Helen, whose face was pale with shock. And finally, he locked eyes with Robert.

Bennett did not raise his voice. He didn't need to. The low, quiet timbre of his voice resonated through the destroyed living room, carrying a devastating, absolute finality that sent a chill down the spine of everyone present.

"My Christmas gift to you all is quite simple," Bennett said, his American accent crisp and lethal in the dead silence of the room. He let the words hang in the air, watching the arrogant certainty drain out of his father's eyes.

"Just wait until tomorrow," Bennett finished softly, his lips curling into a microscopic, terrifying smile. "You'll see."

With that, he turned back around, pushed open the heavy oak doors, and led his daughter out into the freezing, dark winter night. The doors clicked shut behind them, sealing the family inside their ruined holiday, leaving them alone with the bleeding golden child, a shattered tree, and a cryptic promise that felt far more like a death sentence.
