Chapter 23

Bennett returned to the Apex Holdings penthouse, the adrenaline of the morning ambush fading into a deep, satisfying calm. The doors of the private elevator slid open, and he stepped into the bright, pristine living space. "Daddy!" Josephine squealed, dropping a handful of colorful crayons and running across the plush carpet. Bennett dropped to one knee, sweeping his daughter into a massive, warm hug. He buried his face in her fair hair, inhaling her sweet, innocent scent. She was completely unharmed, entirely untouched by the malice and violence that her grandfather and uncle had tried to force upon her. "Did you have a good meeting?" Josephine asked, pulling back to look at him with wide, curious blue eyes. "I had a very productive meeting, sweetheart," Bennett smiled, his handsome face radiating pure love. "The bad men are gone. They will never, ever bother us again." Marcus stood quietly by the window, watching the reunion with a small, respectful smile. He waited until Josephine ran back to her rocking horse before approaching Bennett with a sealed, clear evidence bag. "Sir," Marcus whispered, handing the bag over. "Our cleanup team found this on the rooftop where the sniper was positioned. The shooter managed to evade the police perimeter, but he left his gear behind." Bennett took the bag. Inside was a heavy, military-grade encrypted satellite phone. The screen was cracked, but the power light was still blinking green.
