Chapter 21

The sound of approaching police sirens cut through the freezing winter air, growing louder by the second. Bennett’s security team quickly secured the remaining mercenaries, zip-tying their wrists and kicking their weapons away into the snowdrifts. Silas writhed on the icy pavement, blood seeping through the thick white bandages on his face. He looked up at Bennett, his arrogance finally broken into millions of irreparable pieces. "You set me up," Silas gasped, coughing violently. "You let Clara warn you. You planned this entire ambush just to have me arrested for attempted murder!" "I am a businessman, Silas," Bennett said smoothly, adjusting his tailored vest. "I simply anticipated your desperation. You handed me the legal justification to have you locked away in a federal penitentiary for the next twenty years." Three police cruisers skidded into the intersection, their red and blue lights flashing brilliantly against the white snow. Heavily armed SWAT officers poured out, completely ignoring Bennett and his security team, aiming their weapons directly at Silas and the mercenaries. "Silas Sterling, you are under arrest for domestic terrorism, attempted kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit murder," a commanding officer barked, hauling Silas roughly to his feet. "Bennett, please!" Silas wept, the absolute humiliation crushing him as handcuffs snapped securely around his wrists. "I'm your brother! You can't let them take me!" Bennett turned his back on the pathetic scene. "Take him away," he ordered the commanding officer. "And make sure the press gets a very clear photo of the golden child being loaded into the back of a squad car." Silas's screams faded into the distance as Bennett climbed back into a fresh, undamaged SUV, his empire completely secure.
