Chapter 3

Valentina stood up, the water dripping heavily from her tailored pantsuit and pooling on the polished stone tiles. She kept Owen securely wrapped inside her suit jacket, shielding his shivering body from the cool air conditioning of the conservatory.

She looked up. Every single conversation in the massive, bright room had died. The capos, the wealthy donors, and the conservatory staff stood frozen in absolute silence, staring at the matriarch of the Morello family and her soaking wet heir.

"Thomas, Gregory," Valentina commanded, her voice cutting through the dead air like a razor.

Two massive, fair-skinned bodyguards in dark suits immediately stepped out of the paralyzed crowd. Valentina handed Owen to the men, making sure the jacket remained tightly wrapped around him. "Take him to the secure suite. Do not leave his side."

As the bodyguards hurried the crying child away, Valentina turned back to the pond.

Victor stepped deliberately between Valentina and Celeste, positioning his broad frame as a shield for his niece. He adjusted his expensive formal suit, attempting to maintain an air of patriarchal authority despite the violent confrontation that had just occurred. His American accent was remarkably steady, betraying no remorse.

"You are overreacting, Valentina," Victor said dismissively, brushing a speck of dust from his lapel. "It was just a little lesson. The boy needs to understand that the world is a dangerous place."

"You used my son's life to teach a lesson?" Valentina asked, her voice dropping to a dangerously quiet register.

"I am the senior adviser to this family," Victor scoffed, his rosy skin flushing with arrogant indignation. "I guided your father, and I am trying to guide you. If you cannot handle the harsh realities of our business, perhaps you are not fit to lead it."

Victor, misjudging the lethal stillness of his niece, decided to enforce his dominance. He swung a heavy, closed fist aimed directly at her jaw.

Valentina slipped seamlessly outside the punch. With the practiced, brutal efficiency of a veteran boss, she drove one explosive counterpunch straight across Victor’s face.

The impact cracked like a gunshot. Victor spun backward, his equilibrium completely shattered. He flew directly into a rolling bonsai-transport trolley parked beside the indoor garden.

The metal trolley rocketed sideways under his weight. Lightweight plastic nursery pots burst from their neat stacks, flying through the air. Thick green moss pads tumbled violently across the wet floor. Burlap wraps unraveled in long, chaotic ribbons, and white plant labels scattered beneath the polished shoes of the stunned guests. Foam tree supports collapsed in a heap around Victor as the lower frame of the trolley folded entirely beneath him, burying the old man in a ruin of gardening supplies.

The entire conservatory remained dead silent. There was no dialogue, only the clatter of plastic pots spinning across the stone.
