Chapter 2

The bright colors of the conservatory blurred as raw, maternal panic flooded Valentina’s veins. She could see the dark shape of her three-year-old son sinking beneath the surface of the koi pond, his small arms flailing in a desperate, silent panic. The water was deep, designed for massive ornamental fish, and Owen could not swim.
"Victor, release me this instant!" Valentina demanded, her voice tearing through the ambient noise of the reception.
"You need to let the boy learn, Valentina," Victor grunted, tightening his hold around her ribs. "You coddle the heir. It makes him weak."
"He is three years old!" Valentina screamed.
She stopped struggling forward and abruptly shifted her weight backward. Driving her knee up, she slammed the sharp, stiletto heel of her designer shoe directly down onto the bridge of Victor’s polished leather foot.
Victor let out a sharp gasp of pain, his grip loosening just enough. Valentina tore free, throwing her arms forward, and dove fully clothed into the deep koi pond.
The cold water enveloped her tailored pantsuit, instantly soaking her silk blouse. She kept her eyes open, the bright overhead light piercing through the water, illuminating the frantic, sinking form of her son. She kicked powerfully, her arms slicing through the water until her hands found the fabric of his small cardigan.
Valentina hauled him upward, breaking the surface with a loud, desperate gasp for air.
She pulled Owen tight against her chest and kicked toward the perimeter, throwing her upper body onto the stone edge. Water cascaded from her dark hair and soaked clothes as she dragged her son out of the pond.
Owen collapsed onto the warm stone, coughing up water violently. His tiny chest heaved, his fair, rosy face pale with sheer terror. Valentina fell to her knees beside him, her hands trembling as she patted his back until the coughing subsided and he began breathing normally.
Owen turned and clung desperately to her soaking wet silk blouse. He buried his face in her neck, his small body shivering uncontrollably.

"Mom…" Owen sobbed, his voice cracking with the agonizing realization of betrayal. "She knew I can’t swim."
"I know, my sweet boy," Valentina whispered fiercely, pressing a kiss to his wet hair. "I know."
