Chapter 18

The following weeks brought a tense but absolute peace to the city. The total destruction of the Chicago strike teams sent a terrifying message across the national syndicate network: Valentina Morello was not a vulnerable mother; she was an untouchable, lethal force of nature. No other families dared to challenge her borders.

The botanical conservatory had been entirely repaired, the shattered pots and ruined shade racks replaced with vibrant, exotic new flora. The bright, cinematic sunlight poured through the glass archways, illuminating a space that was now entirely devoid of treacherous whispers.

Valentina stood near the edge of the deep indoor koi pond, exactly where the nightmare had begun. She wore a stunning, emerald-green tailored suit, projecting the flawless, regal elegance of a reigning queen.

Owen was standing beside her, looking closely at the swirling orange fish. He was holding tightly to his mother's hand, his fair, rosy cheeks flushed with excitement. The trauma of the water was slowly fading, replaced by the profound, unshakeable safety of his mother's presence.

"Look, Mommy! That one is huge!" Owen giggled, pointing at a massive koi.

"He is very big," Valentina smiled genuinely, her dark eyes softening with maternal love. She knelt beside him, wrapping her arm securely around his waist. "He's the king of the pond. He protects all the little fishes."

Marcus, the loyal capo, walked into the conservatory, his footsteps echoing softly on the pristine stone tiles. He stopped a respectful distance away, not wanting to interrupt the quiet moment between the boss and her son.

"Speak, Marcus," Valentina said, not taking her eyes off Owen.

"The final shipments from the ports have been secured, Boss," Marcus reported, his American accent smooth and professional. "The revenue stream is stabilized. The donors are thrilled with the new expansion plans."

"And Chicago?" Valentina asked softly.

"Silent," Marcus grinned. "They haven't made a single move since the docks. They are terrified of you."
