Chapter 8

The small leather pouch was dark, stained, and bound tightly by a thick, metallic drawstring clasp—the very clasp that had been digging painfully into Lily’s foot. Dante took a slow, deliberate step toward the stainless steel tray. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he reached out and picked up the pouch. The leather was old, but the weight of it was undeniable.
"Dante... please," Marcus whimpered from the floor, his voice cracking into a pathetic, broken sob. "I had no choice. They made me do it."
Dante ignored him. He held the pouch in his left hand and carefully pulled the metallic drawstring open with his right. The leather parted, revealing the contents hidden within.
Dante tipped the pouch over his large, open palm.
Two objects fell out, landing softly against his tattooed skin.
The first was a massive, incredibly ornate gold ring. It was heavily encrusted with diamonds and bore the ancient crest of the Chicago Syndicate—the most ruthless, bloodthirsty rival Mafia family in the country. It was the personal signet ring of Don Maroni, a man who had been missing and presumed dead for over six months.
The second object was a small, encrypted USB drive, the kind used exclusively by high-level syndicate accountants to store untraceable offshore banking ledgers and blackmail material.
Dante stared at the objects in his hand. The cinematic, bright lighting of the medical room seemed to freeze, casting sharp, unforgiving shadows across his angular face. The pieces of a massive, terrifying puzzle snapped together in his mind with apocalyptic clarity.
"You didn't just steal money, Marcus," Dante said. His voice was a low, vibrating hum that commanded the very oxygen in the room. He spoke incredibly slowly, measuring out the doom of the man bleeding on the floor. "You murdered Don Maroni."
A collective gasp echoed from Leo and Dr. Emma. The murder of a rival Don without the Commission's approval was an act of war that would rain hellfire down upon the entire Ferraro family.
"I didn't kill him!" Marcus shrieked, thrashing against Leo’s foot, desperate to defend his life. "I swear to God, Dante! It was an accident! We were just supposed to negotiate the port tariffs! Things got out of hand! He pulled a gun on me, and I defended myself!"
"And instead of coming to me," Dante whispered, turning his cold, intimidating eyes toward his cousin, "you robbed his corpse. You took his signet ring as a trophy. And you stole his ledgers to blackmail his lieutenants."
"I was protecting us!" Marcus cried, tears streaming down his ruined face. "If Chicago found out he died on our territory, they would have slaughtered us all! I had to hide the evidence!"
"So you hid it. Inside my daughter's riding boot," Dante stated, the sheer, sociopathic audacity of the act dropping the temperature of the room to absolute zero.

"The feds raided the clubhouse this morning!" Marcus argued frantically, his fair skin pale with terror. "They were searching all the lockers and the offices! I panicked! The kids were getting dressed for their riding lesson in the hall! It was the only place I knew the FBI wouldn't check! I was going to take it out as soon as the raid was over, but the nanny rushed her out to the stables!"
"You used my three-year-old daughter. As a mule. To hide a murder," Dante summarized, his voice dead and hollow.
