Chapter 7

Dr. Emma did not hesitate. Empowered by the absolute protection of the Mafia Boss standing beside her, she stepped up to the examination bench. She adjusted her protective glasses and slid the blunt, rounded lower blade of the heavy trauma shears cleanly beneath the thick, black rubber rim of Lily’s riding boot.
"Look at me, Lily," Dante murmured, stepping close and gently cradling his daughter's face in his large, tattooed hands. He positioned his broad body to completely block her view of her own leg. "Look right into my eyes. Think about the horses. Which pony is your favorite?"
"Buttercup," Lily sniffled, her bright blue eyes locking onto her father's face, captivated by his calm, steady presence.
"Buttercup is a very good pony," Dante said, his voice a low, mesmerizing hum. "We will go see her as soon as we are done here. Just keep looking at me."
Behind Dante’s back, Dr. Emma squeezed the heavy handles of the shears. The thick rubber of the upscale riding boot resisted for a moment, then began to give way with a loud, tough snik-snik-snik sound. She cut straight down the outer seam of the boot, moving with practiced, medical precision, ensuring the blade never came close to the child’s fair, rosy skin.
Across the room, Marcus let out a pathetic, desperate wail.
"No! Dante, don't let her do it!" Marcus screamed, struggling to push himself up from the wreckage of the orthotic cart. "I'll give you whatever you want! I'll sign over the southern ports! I'll leave the country! Just don't open the boot!"
"Keep him on the floor, Leo," Dante commanded without turning his head.
"Yes, Uncle Dante," Leo replied instantly. The fifteen-year-old stepped over to Marcus, placing his sneaker firmly against the older man’s bleeding shoulder, pinning him effortlessly back into the debris. "Stay down."
"It's going to destroy the family, Dante!" Marcus wept, genuine, hysterical tears spilling over his cheeks. "You don't understand what you're doing!"
"I understand perfectly," Dante whispered, continuing to stroke Lily’s hair.
With one final, heavy crunch of the shears, Dr. Emma reached the sole of the boot. The thick rubber casing split wide open, peeling back like the skin of a dark fruit.
"Okay, sweetie, the pressure is gone," Dr. Emma said gently. "I'm going to carefully slide your foot out now."
Emma supported Lily’s heel and gently pulled the child's foot free from the ruined boot. Lily let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, wiggling her toes in her thick equestrian socks.
"It stopped scratching me, Daddy," Lily said, offering a small, fragile smile.
"Good girl," Dante praised softly, kissing her forehead.
He turned his cold, intimidating eyes toward the examination bench. Dr. Emma had set the split rubber boot down on the padded surface. She reached for a pair of long medical tweezers from a nearby stainless steel tray.
"Let's see what was causing the obstruction," Emma murmured, her American accent tight with curiosity. She peered into the dark cavity of the severed boot. "There is something lodged deep in the toe box. It looks like... a small leather pouch. The sharp edges of the drawstring clasp must have been digging into her skin."

Emma used the tweezers to grip the object. With a swift pull, she extracted it from the depths of the boot and dropped it onto the sterile metal tray with a heavy, distinct clink.
The entire room went completely silent. The bright, cinematic lighting reflected glaringly off the small, worn leather pouch resting on the steel. Dante stared at it, the charming, romantic look of his face melting away entirely into a mask of pure, absolute ice.
