Chapter 1

The private medical room inside the Mafia-owned Connecticut equestrian club was bathed in bright, cinematic light. The afternoon sun poured through the massive skylights, offering a crisp, natural illumination entirely devoid of any dull yellow tint. The pristine white walls and the polished sterile tiles reflected the vivid colors of the room’s contents: rows of riding-boot fitting racks, padded helmet cubbies, rolling orthotic carts, and neatly arranged saddle-pad shelves. There was no background music playing, leaving the vast space echoing with a chilling, clinical silence.
At the center of the room, three-year-old Lily Bellandi sat perched on a padded examination bench. Her fair, rosy skin was pale with absolute terror. She wore an expensive, tailored equestrian sweater, dark riding trousers, and tall rubber riding boots that were currently the source of her panic. Her small hands gripped the top handles of her right boot with white-knuckled desperation, her tiny frame shaking violently.
Dr. Emma Hayes, the thirty-eight-year-old private-club physician, stood over her. Emma wore crisp medical scrubs, latex gloves, and protective glasses, her American accent soft and reassuring as she tried to calm the child. In her right hand, she held a heavy pair of blunt trauma shears.
"Lily, sweetheart, I need you to hold perfectly still," Dr. Emma said, her voice steady and professional as she carefully slid the lower blade of the blunt trauma shears beneath the thick rubber rim of Lily’s boot. "I am just going to make a small cut down the side. You won't feel a thing, I promise you."
"No! Please don't touch it!" Lily shrieked, her bright blue eyes wide with unadulterated fear. She pulled her leg back, her fair cheeks flushed with panicked tears. "It’s going to get me!"
"Nothing is going to get you, sweetie," Emma coaxed, stepping forward again. "But your foot is wedged tightly, and you are in pain. We have to get the boot off."
"Daddy!" Lily cried out, her tiny chest heaving as she looked frantically toward the closed clinic doors. "I want my Daddy! Please!"
Standing near the rolling orthotic cart, Marcus Bellandi let out a sharp, irritated sigh. At forty-two, Dante’s cousin and Mafia associate wore an incredibly expensive riding-club suit, a luxury wristwatch gleaming under the bright lights, and polished leather shoes. His fair, rosy complexion darkened with impatience.
"For God's sake, Emma, just pull the damn thing off her foot," Marcus snapped, stepping forward. "We don't have time for these childish tantrums. Dante is waiting for us in the main lodge, and I will not be delayed by a stubborn toddler."
"I cannot just pull it, Marcus," Emma replied sharply, glaring at the older man. "Her ankle is swollen, and she is clearly traumatized by something. The safest medical protocol is to cut the rubber to avoid fracturing the bone."
Lily gripped both boot handles even tighter, her small body vibrating with sheer panic. She looked up at the doctor, tears spilling over her rosy cheeks.
"Daddy… something keeps moving inside my boot," Lily sobbed, her voice breaking with absolute terror. "It’s scratching me! It’s moving!"

Marcus’s eyes narrowed instantly. A strange, volatile shift altered his entire demeanor. "Moving?" he muttered, stepping aggressively toward the examination bench. "There is nothing moving in there. Give me the shears, Emma. I'll cut it myself."
"You will absolutely not," Emma stated, raising her protective glasses and shielding the child. "Step back, Marcus. I am the physician here."
