Chapter 5

I asked the obvious question.
“What if I never withdrew?”
Martin did not answer.
That told me more than words.
“Tonight wasn’t about Oliver’s dinner.”
“No.”
“What was it?”
“A test.”
My hands went cold.
Of Oliver?
Of me?
Both.
They wanted to know whether my son would obey Damon when ordered to reject me.
At three.
That was their measurement.
If Oliver refused completely, the conditioning had not gone far enough.
If he complied despite crying, they could continue.
If I discovered it and reacted violently, Damon could use my reaction as evidence that the household had become unstable.
Perfect trap.
I looked at the dented paint tray.
They got part of what they wanted.
I had hit Damon.
Defending myself, yes.
But thirty guests outside might only hear pieces later.
Rosalind would tell them I attacked my husband.
Damon would show the paint.
The ruined studio.
The wedding ring in the tray.
Then the narrative:
Viviana snapped.
Ended her marriage impulsively.
Frightened Oliver.
Damon reluctantly takes the child somewhere calm.
Household crisis becomes political opening.
I looked at Martin.
“Who is waiting for that story?”
He said nothing.
I waited.
Three names.
Anthony Hale.
Samuel Crest.
Peter Rowe.
Two captains and one old family adviser.
Not enough to remove me.
Enough to start whispers.
Whispers are how relatives test whether a lie can breathe.
I asked:
“Does Damon know the entire plan?”
Martin surprised me.
“No.”
Interesting.
“What does he think?”
“That he deserves equal authority as your husband.”
Of course.
Simpler.
More believable.
Rosalind had told her son that I diminished him.
That Oliver needed a father who was visibly stronger inside the home.
That if Damon became Steward someday, it would merely restore balance.
He did not know Martin wanted a controllable adult between Hale and its child heir.
So Damon was being used too.
Not victim.
Participant.
Both can exist.
Then Martin said:
“Damon thinks Oliver becomes head at eighteen.”
I stared.
“He doesn’t?”
Martin looked away.
“No.”
May you like
There was another layer.
Of course.
