Chapter 4

Martin entered my office smiling.

That irritated me immediately.

People who smile before they know why they have been summoned usually think they know.

He saw the envelope.

The smile disappeared.

Good.

“My father wrote your name.”

Martin sat.

“Your father wrote many names.”

“Next to Rosalind Pierce.”

Silence.

“And Edward.”

Longer silence.

Then:

“What happened tonight?”

I almost laughed.

Wrong direction.

“You tell me.”

Martin looked toward the damaged portrait behind me.

My painted face.

Damon’s replacement portrait on the table.

The story assembled itself across his expression.

“You found both.”

“Yes.”

He sighed.

Not surprise.

Disappointment.

At failure.

“What were you planning?”

Martin looked older suddenly.

Not guilty.

Tired.

“The same thing your father spent thirty years preventing.”

There.

He admitted structure before details.

Hale had an old custom.

Not written.

Not official.

More dangerous because everyone treated it as common sense.

If the sitting head married outside the Hale bloodline, their spouse gained household authority but never family command.

If children came, succession remained Hale through the child.

Fine.

Except ambitious in-laws saw the gap.

Control the household.

Shape the heir.

Wait.

Martin’s father attempted it with my mother.

Failed.

Rosalind apparently intended to succeed with Oliver.

“What does Damon get?”

Martin hesitated.

“He becomes Steward.”

I stared.

A title I had not heard since childhood.

The Steward was an old temporary position used when a Hale heir was too young to lead after a death.

Not boss.

Guardian of assets, household, and child until adulthood.

It had not existed in two generations.

“You expected me to die?”

Martin shook his head.

“No.”

“Then how does a Steward appear?”

His eyes lowered.

“If the head voluntarily withdraws.”

I almost smiled.

“Voluntarily.”

That word gets abused more than power itself.

Martin continued.

Damon was supposed to convince the family that marriage and motherhood had made me unwilling to remain head.

Not incompetent.

That would provoke resistance.

Unwilling.

Tired.

Ready to focus on Oliver.

A graceful withdrawal.

Then Damon would serve as Steward for his own son.

Rosalind would control the household around them.

And Martin would guide Damon from inside Hale.

Three adults.

May you like

One toddler.

All they needed was me to disappear politely.
