Chapter 3

I opened the envelope alone.

Almost.

Rafe stood outside.

No one else.

My father’s handwriting was shaky near the end of his life, but unmistakable.

Vivi,

If this portrait is ever altered to remove you, do not assume the person holding the brush is the person behind it.

I stopped.

Father had commissioned the portrait shortly before he died.

I remembered complaining about standing still for hours.

I had been twenty-four.

Newly in command.

Unmarried.

Damon was not even in my life yet.

So why hide a letter behind my future position on a family portrait?

I continued.

Hale has one weakness I never fixed: men who believe marriage can accomplish what succession cannot.

My skin went cold.

Father knew.

Not Damon specifically.

The pattern.

Older branches had tried for years to control Hale leadership through marriage alliances.

My mother dealt with it.

Then I did.

Father believed eventually someone would stop trying to beat the Hale head directly and instead marry close enough to redirect the line.

Then came the final paragraph.

If they ever try to turn your child against you, look at the dinner table before you look at the council table.

I read it twice.

Dinner table.

Not captains.

Not rivals.

Household.

People close enough to shape a child’s normal.

I thought of Rosalind holding Oliver’s plate.

Damon gripping his wrist.

Erase her face.

Earn your dinner.

Father understood something I had not.

You do not need to overthrow a parent if you can teach the child that love depends on obedience to someone else.

Then I found a second page.

Only three names.

EDWARD PIERCE.

ROSALIND PIERCE.

MARTIN HALE.

Damon’s father.

Damon’s mother.

My father’s older cousin.

Three people linked before Damon and I ever met.

Edward Pierce had died before our wedding.

Martin Hale was still alive.

Seventy-one.

Retired.

And present at every major Hale dinner for the past decade.

I called Rafe.

“Bring Martin.”

He hesitated.

“He’s at the house now.”

May you like

Of course he was.

Family always arrives before truth when the plan is already moving.
