Chapter 12

Damon started therapy.

He told me.

I did not praise him.

He was an adult doing necessary work after harming his family.

Still, it mattered.

We communicated only about Oliver.

Briefly.

Clearly.

No marriage discussion.

After four months he asked:

“Can I take Oliver to lunch?”

I said no.

Then:

“Can I join you and him for lunch?”

Different.

I considered.

Oliver wanted it.

So yes.

Public garden café.

One hour.

Damon arrived early.

No gifts.

Good.

Oliver ran toward him.

Stopped.

Looked at me.

I nodded.

He hugged his father.

Damon cried.

Oliver immediately asked for pancakes.

Priorities.

During lunch, Oliver spilled juice.

He froze.

That hurt.

Damon saw it.

Reached for a napkin.

Then stopped.

“What do we do?”

Oliver looked confused.

“Clean?”

“Yes.”

No punishment.

No withheld food.

Just cleanup.

Small.

Important.

Then Oliver refused eggs.

Damon looked at me.

Old reflex.

I said nothing.

He took a breath.

“Okay.”

Oliver ate pancakes.

The world survived.

Afterward Damon told me quietly:

“I didn’t realize how many things I turned into obedience tests.”

I looked at him.

“I did.”

He nodded.

Fair.

He asked about us.

I answered:

“Not today.”

He accepted it.
