Chapter 2

I did not open the envelope in front of Damon.

That disappointed him.

Good.

Fear becomes more useful when answers wait.

I handed the ruined portrait to Rafe, my senior bodyguard.

“Take this to my office.”

Damon stepped forward.

“That belongs to both of us.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“It belonged to the family before you married into it.”

His face tightened.

There it was.

A sensitivity I had ignored for years.

Married into.

Damon hated that phrase.

Rosalind hated it more.

The Hale estate belonged to my branch.

The organization belonged to the Hale name.

My father chose me as successor before I met Damon.

Damon married me knowing exactly who I was.

Yet over time he started speaking as though marriage converted Hale into joint property.

Our home.

Our name.

Our decisions.

Normal words.

Until they weren’t.

I asked Rafe to search the portrait studio.

Not destructively.

Nothing dramatic.

Just everything Damon and Rosalind had touched recently.

The first thing he found was a second portrait order.

Rolled behind stacked frames.

Different composition.

Same family.

Except I was not in it.

Damon stood at the center.

Oliver beside him.

Rosalind seated on the other side.

No Viviana Hale.

I slowly unrolled the sketch.

“What is this?”

Damon said nothing.

Rosalind answered.

“A contingency portrait.”

I laughed.

“What emergency removes me from paint?”

Her mouth tightened.

“If leadership changed.”

There.

Leadership.

Not marriage.

Not family conflict.

Power.

I looked at Damon.

“You commissioned this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Three months.

Long before tonight.

Oliver had not been improvising.

Erasing my face was rehearsal.

I looked at Rosalind.

“What were you training him to do?”

Her expression remained cold.

“Accept change.”

My stomach turned.

A three-year-old boy had been denied dinner until he practiced removing his mother from the family image.

Not because Damon hated a painting.

Because someone expected a future where I was no longer Hale’s center.

May you like

I picked up the sealed envelope.

My father apparently expected that possibility too.
