Chapter 9

The warm golden light from the wall sconces illuminated the subtle, refined details of Nathaniel’s face—the sharply defined jaw, the high-bridged nose, and the faint, assessing narrowing of his eyes. He looked at the beautiful housemaid not as a servant, but as a woman of profound substance.

"Did you believe I would allow Vivian to dismiss you?" Nathaniel asked, his voice a low, vibrating rumble in the quiet corridor.

"I didn't know what to believe, sir," Alma admitted, her expressive brows drawing together. "She is from a very powerful family. I know how important these alliances are to the syndicate."

"Is any alliance worth the price of my daughter's tears?" Nathaniel questioned, his gaze dropping briefly to her unevenly cut hair before returning to her eyes.

Alma felt a sudden, electric jolt at the intensity of his stare. Her slender figure remained perfectly still, the sophisticated black maid dress feeling suddenly very warm.

"You broke the engagement," Alma said, stating the obvious fact, still struggling to comprehend the magnitude of what had occurred downstairs.

"Will my enemies interpret tonight as a moment of weakness, or a declaration of absolute boundaries?" Nathaniel asked, turning slightly to look down the long, empty hall. "Does a man who cuts off his own right hand to cure an infection look weak, or does he look like a man who will stop at nothing to survive?"

"They will be angry," Alma whispered, understanding the violent repercussions of the mafia world. "Vivian's father will retaliate."

"Do you fear the coming war, Alma?" Nathaniel asked, turning his full attention back to her.

"I fear for Elodie," Alma answered honestly, her maternal instincts for the motherless child overriding her own self-preservation.

Nathaniel’s cold eyes softened by a fraction of a millimeter. He raised his right hand. The artistic tattoos across his fingers flexed as he gently, almost hesitantly, reached out. He did not touch her face, but his knuckles lightly grazed the jagged ends of her ruined hair.

"Will you trust me to keep the violence far from these walls?" Nathaniel asked softly.

"I trust you," Alma breathed, the words escaping her lips before she could overthink them.

"Will you accept a new position in this household?" Nathaniel inquired, his hand dropping back to his side. "Will you act as the head of my daughter's personal staff, answering to absolutely no one but me?"

Alma’s eyes widened. It was a massive promotion, a shield of protection that would elevate her far beyond the reach of the regular household staff, securing her future and her safety.

"Yes, Mr. Rook," Alma answered, a genuine, beautiful smile breaking across her face. "I would be honored."

"Have you realized yet that your courage changed the entire trajectory of this family tonight?" Nathaniel asked.

He didn't wait for her to answer. He offered a slow, respectful nod, then turned and walked down the corridor toward his private study. Alma watched his broad, powerful shoulders disappear into the shadows, realizing that her life had just irrevocably intertwined with the most dangerous man she had ever met.
