Chapter 1

The engagement dinner was a spectacle of flawless, luminous perfection, bathed in a bright, airy warmth that defied the dark reality of the men seated at the tables. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung from the soaring ceiling of the Rook mansion, casting a soft, elegant golden light across carved ivory-paneled walls and gilded ceiling moldings. The room felt entirely fresh, a carefully curated illusion of untouchable wealth. Tall ivory candles burned steadily inside heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames reflecting off polished walnut tables, gold-rimmed porcelain plates, and sparkling crystal stemware. The air was heavy with the scent of white roses and the quiet, measured conversations of the most dangerous white American crime families on the eastern seaboard.
At the center of this radiant atmosphere stood Nathaniel Rook. At forty-four, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star-handsome masculinity that commanded the absolute attention of the room. His broad, powerful shoulders stretched the fabric of an impeccably tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was swept naturally back, though a few loose strands fell casually near his forehead. His cold, observant eyes missed nothing. Refined artistic tattoos stretched across his hands and fingers with generous spacing, and a small, intricate neck tattoo peeked above his collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand, catching the golden light alongside his polished leather shoes.
Beside him stood Vivian Cross, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She was a vision of sculpted perfection in a satin evening gown that clung flawlessly to her fair, rosy skin. Diamond earrings swung gently from her lobes, catching the chandelier light, perfectly matching the massive engagement ring on her left hand. She offered a courteous, practiced smile to a passing underboss, though beneath her polished exterior lurked an impatient, driving need to control every facet of the Rook household.
"The evening is a complete triumph, darling," Vivian murmured, turning her smile toward Nathaniel, her American accent crisp and sophisticated. "Our guests are thoroughly impressed by the new arrangements. Everything feels so much lighter now, don't you think?"
Nathaniel’s cold eyes shifted from the crowded dining tables to his fiancée’s flawless face. He did not smile. His voice, when he spoke, was deep, quiet, and possessed a terrifying gravity.
"Do you believe a few white roses can alter the foundation of this house, Vivian?"
His dialogue consisted exclusively of questions, a long-standing habit that unnerved even his most hardened lieutenants. It forced the listener into a constant state of defense.
"They certainly set a better tone for our future," Vivian replied, her smile tightening marginally. "We are moving forward, Nathaniel. A fresh start requires a fresh aesthetic. We simply must ensure that everyone understands their proper place."

"Is a fresh start synonymous with forced compliance?" Nathaniel inquired, his gaze slowly drifting away from her.
He looked toward the swinging doors of the dining hall, where the warm, golden highlights illuminated two figures stepping into the room. The subtle, almost imperceptible tightening of Nathaniel’s jaw signaled a sudden shift in the room's atmospheric pressure.
