Chapter 4

The medium wide shot framed the immediate, terrifying fallout of Alma’s softly spoken confession. The bright, airy colors of the dining hall felt suddenly charged with an explosive, high-voltage tension. The clean whites of the table linens and the polished highlights of the silver cutlery shimmered beneath the warm golden light, a stark contrast to the dark reality of the confrontation.

Nathaniel moved.

He did not rush, nor did he display any outward sign of explosive anger. He simply stepped sideways with a fluid, terrifying masculine grace. His broad, powerful shoulders shifted beneath the tailored dark three-piece suit. In one deliberate, protective motion, Nathaniel stepped between Vivian and both Alma and Elodie.

He rested one heavily tattooed hand gently on his daughter’s small shoulder, acting as an impenetrable wall, physically shielding the child and the brave housemaid from his furious fiancée.

Vivian swallowed hard, sinking her manicured nails into the palms of her hands. She forced herself to meet Nathaniel’s cold, observant eyes. She desperately attempted to restore her reassuring, polite smile, projecting an aura of complete, unbothered calm.

“Children play. Hair grows back.”

Vivian’s voice was lightly amused, carrying a smooth, casually certain tone. She delivered the words as if dismissing a spilled glass of water. Her smile was painted flawlessly onto her face, but her eyes were intensely watchful, carefully tracking his sharply defined expression for any sign of acceptance.

Nathaniel did not smile back. He did not nod in agreement. The extremely short stubble on his jawline seemed to harden into absolute granite.

"Do you believe the psychological torment of my daughter qualifies as a game, Vivian?" Nathaniel asked. His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like a physical blow.

Vivian’s smile tightened slightly at the corners, but she maintained her posture. "Nathaniel, darling, please. The maid is being dramatic. They were just playing salon upstairs. It was a harmless activity to keep them occupied."

"Is it customary for harmless activities to end in tears and severed braids presented at my dinner table?" Nathaniel inquired, his cold, perceptive eyes dissecting her false narrative with surgical precision.

"She is just trying to cause trouble," Vivian insisted, her voice lowering slightly, attempting to manage the situation before it escalated into a public spectacle. "You know how attached Elodie has become to her. The maid encourages it. I simply wanted to establish some healthy boundaries."

"Do boundaries require the use of shears and coercion to be established?" Nathaniel questioned, his gaze remaining unyielding.

The guests remained absolutely silent and attentive, paralyzed by the public interrogation of the future bride. The bright, luminous colors of the engagement dinner felt permanently stained by the exposure of such calculated, systemic cruelty.
