Chapter 30

"The resignation is exceedingly generous," Nathaniel replied, walking across the room to meet her. He tossed the handkerchief aside, the cold, sociopathic mask melting entirely as he looked at his wife. "Your foundation is now the largest landowner in the northern district."
"You handled him quickly," Alma noted, reaching out to gently trace the artistic tattoos on his hands.
"He was a blunt instrument," Nathaniel murmured, pulling her securely against his chest. He buried his face in her neck, inhaling her sweet, grounding scent. "He did not understand that I will annihilate anyone who attempts to cast a shadow over your light."
Alma wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him deeply. The intense, magnetic pull between them remained as powerful as the day they married. She was not intimidated by the violence he wielded; she understood it was the impenetrable shield that kept their family safe.
"Come back to the ballroom with me," Alma whispered against his lips. "We have an empire to entertain."
Nathaniel smiled, a rare, genuine expression that transformed his movie-star handsome face. "Lead the way, Mrs. Rook."
They walked back into the bright, cinematic light of the gala, moving seamlessly among the elite guests. They were the undisputed, untouchable king and queen of the city, ruling with flawless, absolute harmony.
The following morning, the sun rose over a city entirely subjugated to the Rook name. The violent eradication of the federal threat was already a whispered legend in the underworld, further cementing Nathaniel's terrifying reputation. But inside the heavily fortified walls of the estate, the atmosphere was a sanctuary of profound, unshakeable peace.
Alma sat in the sunlit breakfast room, drinking coffee and reviewing the architectural plans for the new community centers funded by Vance's forced resignation. She had transformed the dark legacy of the mafia into an instrument of profound positive change, utilizing Nathaniel's absolute power to protect the innocent.
Nathaniel walked into the room, dressed in casual dark trousers and an unbuttoned shirt. He looked incredibly relaxed, the heavy burden of the crown lifted by the presence of the woman sitting at the table. He walked over, pressing a warm kiss to her fair, rosy cheek.
"The perimeter is entirely quiet," Nathaniel murmured, sitting beside her. "The peace is absolute."

"Because of you," Alma smiled, intertwining her fingers with his.
Nathaniel looked at the beautiful woman who had refused to be a victim, who had stood up to cruelty and claimed her throne. "No, Alma," Nathaniel whispered, his dark eyes filled with fierce, eternal devotion. "It is because of us." The monsters were permanently buried, the empire was invincible, and the Rook family was finally, completely safe.
