Chapter 9

The seven elders expected to meet the next night.
I let them.
Same strategy as always.
Put people who think they control the room in one place.
They gathered in my father’s old dining room.
Celeste.
Owen.
Richard.
Thomas.
Anthony.
Caleb.
Patrick.
Seven.
I entered last.
Maya beside me.
That immediately bothered them.
Good.
Richard spoke first.
“This is family business.”
Maya sat.
“So am I.”
I almost smiled.
Then I placed Elias’s photographs on the table.
No theatrics.
No projections.
Paper copies.
Names.
Transfers.
Twelve million.
The room changed.
Thomas looked at Celeste.
“You said the money came from reserve holdings.”
Interesting.
Not everyone knew it was stolen from donor programs.
Good distinction.
Anthony cursed.
Patrick went white.
Their conspiracy was already less unified than Celeste wanted me to believe.
I asked one question.
“How many of you knew where the money came from?”
Celeste stayed silent.
Owen too.
Richard shook his head.
Thomas denied it.
Caleb admitted he suspected.
Patrick said nothing.
Useful.
Then Maya placed the continuity page down.
“Which of you decided my daughter needed seven men to own her future?”
Richard objected.
“No one owns—”
Maya looked at him.
“Then why is my name listed for removal?”
Silence.
Good.
I let them sit in it.
Then I explained the candle.
The chair.
Sadie.
Maya.
The fake plan to discredit her.
This part several elders genuinely did not know.
Thomas turned toward Owen.
“You used the child?”
Owen snapped:
“Don’t perform morality now.”
The table fractured.
That was the real ending.
Not my violence.
Their trust in each other.
Celeste had funded a coalition using partial truths.
Once everyone knew the whole plan, alliances changed.
I looked around.
“You wanted a post-Victor structure.”
No one spoke.
“Here it is.”
I removed every one of them from advisory authority.
Not from blood.
Not from life.
From command.
No more secret continuity council.
No more elder veto.
No more stolen donor money financing loyalty.
Sadie would inherit nothing automatically.
May you like
That shocked them most.
Perfect.
